So about 3 years ago I went to a local show and the ring steward pointed out my collar… which was an incorporated choker with a small pearl. She suggested it wasn’t ok.
That was my first and only dressage show. Do they address attire in the “rule book”?
Decades ago I showed aqha hunt seat and it was just a pin on your choker.
The style now is the wrap style collar, but you can also wear a ratcatcher with a stock pin. I am not a hunter person, but don’t believe that other neckwear is typical.
Pehsness, I suppose it could be different in CA, but many people thing neckwear is required, but it is not, with a standup collar like you posted. If you wear a collared shirt (like a men’s dress shirt), then neckwear is required. Stock ties can either be pre-tied ones that have Velcro in the back, or you can tie them on, though I don’t think many people do that. The pin just holds everything in place.
Neckwear cannot be worn without a coat, but you also need a shirt with at least short sleeves when coats are waived. An upside of not wearing neck wear is not having to remember to remove it if coats are waived.
I’m not sure when it happened, but the stand up collar by itself is fairly new to the rules. Just fyi: if you get the shirt you posted, don’t forget you can’t wear that if you don’t wear a coat (waived).
All my show shirts (long and short sleeved) have the stand up collar similar to the one OP posted. I have never worn a stock tie. I wear my jacket if it’s cool enough, otherwise I just wear a show shirt - long sleeve or short - based on my ride time temps. I’ve never been questioned about the collar, even at championships, so I think stewards all know the rules now. Of course, sleeveless shirts are a no-no if not wearing a jacket.
I don’t spend much time in the hunter ring, but they don’t generally wear pins on their chokers anymore. Someone started spreading the word that there was a danger of getting stabbed by the pin if you fell off,
A traditional stock is a separate piece. Sometimes has a buttonhole that you button onto the back of the shirt. Then you tie a square knot, and arrange the ends neatly. The stock pin (like a regular tie pin) is to stop the loose ends from blowing up into your face.
With a pretied stock, it is the velcro at the back that holds it on.
There are also some that are integrated with the shirt, though those are usally more frilly
Haven’t for quite some time. No pins, no chokers. The integrated “wrap collar” is pretty much ubiquitous. And thank the horse show heavens for it . No more chokers or pins to lose, and you can just open the collar between classes to cool off! Not to mention tech fabrics - I still have some pink and blue choker style cotton show shirts and a couple wool blend windowpane coats (they’re so unfashionably long, now), just sitting in my closet. Looking at them makes me sweaty, not to mention we used to have to dry clean them after every show!
If you’re wearing a shadbelly or doing breed show “hunters” the style is different, of course.
I assume the Greenhawk shirt would be fine under a coat. I have heard that sometimes the necks are tight on those (not an issue I’ve had personally, but if things tend to get constrictive for you, it’s worth having time to return or buying a backup).
The integrated collar thing has been around for at least 10 years. I haven’t shown since 2017 or 2018 and I was wearing a integrated collar then. I don’t tolerate tight things around my neck and it was a godsend to be able to ditch the stock tie for me - I cold wait to close the collar until the last water break before I headed into the ring. the other advantage being if coats are waived while you’re already on, super simple to open the collar if you want to ride without your jacket last minute.
The only issue with that shirt would be the sleeveless if jackets are waived. I always brought both sleeveless and short sleeve shirts in hot weather so I could switch out if coats were waived.
