Show Shirt

If coats are waived, are long sleeve button-down like oxfords allowed? Are the pockets legal?

I’m not going to be showing this year, but I’m just curious about it. I cant stand the paper thin/see through horsey show shirts that I see in tack shops, so if I can buy better fabric from other stores I’d much prefer it.

yes and yes. Must have a sleeve and a collar of some sort. “without decoration” often taken to mean solid color/color blocking (some show shirts are quite patterned these days). See page 5: https://files.usef.org/assets/VqIPYD…entbooklet.pdf But I think you should visit your local tack store. There are other colors than white, and many technical fabrics these days that are not see-thru. GOlf shirts are a nice alternative… usually technical fabrics. I get them at TJ Maxx for around $19

Allowed yes, but it doesn’t sound very practical as most oxfords don’t stretch and aren’t designed for movement.

I’ve ridden in an oxford for schooling shows (both dressage and jumping), I like them specifically for them not stretching. I don’t tend to have any issues with them as long as I tuck them into my breeches well.

I’ve only looked in one tack shop and they aren’t one that necessarily carries the best brands, but it’s the only shop with an english focus within ~1 hour of me unless I go to horsey consignment events.

What colors are allowed if non-white is allowed? I was under the impression it had to be white or near-white.

Are you in the US? If so examine DR120 in https://www.usef.org/forms-pubs/F3p8pgrWgAo/dr-dressage-division and also

You could order riding shirts online that protect from sun and are very comfortable and cool.

You may be thinking of breeches. The rule there is white “or light colored.”

The color rule for shirts is without decoration. Any color is allowed although white is definitely very prevalent.

I have shown wearing oxford shirts in light blue, medium blue, white, and even dark maroon/burgundy.

I keep two older show shirts (still a technical, cooling fabric) that are a color just for this, because I loathe the all-white look. One is a light blue, one is light pink. I also keep a navy polo shirt, too, if I want to go short-sleeved.

What brands of show shirts have you tried? I find the Essex ones to be thicker than RJ, and the TS sunshirts are thinner than either of those, for example.

The first thing that comes to my mind is that when coats are waived, it is really, really hot and often humid as well. A thin, white material is really nice then. Mesh even better.

In AZ we mostly ride wearing long sleeve shirts to protect our skin. Many shirts are light weight, moisture wicking with a cooling effect. I prefer a print, light color as opposed to white. Many go on sale when the new patterns and colors for the next year are available so are quite reasonably priced.

I have several long sleeve tech fabric shirts in a variety of colors. Specifically bought a couple years ago so as to avoid tan lines for my sister’s late summer wedding. Most of they have mesh under the arms that makes a huge difference in cooling for me. I get quite hot - so a cotton oxford would be just as bad for me as a coat.

When waiving of coats became a much more prevalent thing (thank god) - in my area it was pretty common for shirts to be white. Now it is probably 50/50 white vs non-white. For me, it usually depends on whether coats have been waived prior to my getting dressed for the ring. If they have not been waived, but there is a chance - I’m in my integrated collar white shirt so that I’m good to go either way. If I know they are not going to get waived, I’ll wear whatever is more comfortable. If they’ve been waived before I even get changed - it’s a non-white shirt. I still want to know who the h*ll though white was a good plan around horses…
