Showing a Foal

One of my neighbors is going to the Sallie B Wheeler championships and asked if I’d like to throw my colt on the trailer for the foals of this year class that is offered the day before the champs. I’m considering it, so I entered him in a local show that offers HB this coming weekend. But I now realized I have no idea what I’m doing.

Has anyone ever shown a foal before? I was going to put his dam in a bridle and have him in his leather halter with a nameplate & leather shank. Is there anything obvious I could be missing? Any tips for showing a foal? As of now, he will be the only HB entry at the local show. DH will be on the shank for the mare and I will have the foal as I’m shorter.

Since the breeder was also coming to the same show my daughter had her five year old entered in Dressage she had her new five month old weanling shipped to the Morgan Nationals. The show had about 1200 head attending.

She thought since he was there and could be entered into the Sport Horse In Hand class as there was not a prerequisite for qualifying for the class he was entered into the Stallion/Geldings section.

There he was a five months old in the middle of twelve other real horses who had been at shows for years.

He was not impressed by the others, he did his class without fault and they retired to the line up.

When it was announced he won the class handler daughter and my wife, the breeder and her daughter who were all there nearly fainted

He also out scored all the ten mares who were in a separate class

Being the highest scoring entry he was award the World Championship Sport Horse In Hand as a weanling. When they hung the championship ribbon on him they had to tie a knot it as it was dragging the ground

We are not sure but the may be the youngest Morgan World Champion.

He just turned one year last month and really is a good boy

(daughter also had this horse’s half brother who two years prior had also won the same World Championship, he was lost in a pasture accident as a three year old. This May was the birth of his full sister (a beautiful black filly) who has been purchased by another person who intends on showing her)

Is your foal weaned? @Laurierace has experience with hunter breeding classes. Perhaps she’ll give you some advice on what to expect and what you need to do.

Sallie B Wheeler has the mares in a bridle and the foals in a halter. They show on the triangle there but it’s not like a dressage triangle, you walk one side then trot the far side then walk the far side. The foals do not trot however so you don’t have to worry about that until next year

He is not weaned.

Now the second show is the C rated show before the Sallie B. Wheeler Championship begins the next day, yes? You may have to have your foal recorded with USEF or USHJA by then. @Laurierace will know better than I.

Hope you have a great time and we’d love photos!

The Friday show is basically a dress rehearsal for Saturday. Beware it’s always hot as balls it seems so come prepared with fans etc
