Showing a leased horse

I have leased a horse to a friend. There is a written lease. She is planning on showing him at recognized competitions.
What paperwork does she need so I don’t have to sign the entry as owner? Is there anything I am responsible for doing?
I will be out of the country at the time of the show and don’t want her to hit snags.
TIA.

You have to record the lease with USEF and USDF.

USDF needs you to fill out their lease form. USEF requires a notarized copy of the lease along with their lease recording.

If time is of the essence, she can enter the show and list you as the owner for the show, with herself as the rider and trainer. You can pre-sign some waivers for her. And then afterwards you can do the lease paperwork.

You don’t really need to record the lease, I’ve leased horses and just put the owner as the owner and myself as the rider. Granted, it was always really easy to snag their signature when we crossed paths at the barn.

Thanks.
The show uses electronic entry.
I will have to find, and sign, the new 2023 waivers and upload them to the website I suppose.
Since I will be out fo the country for the week before the show I will not be available for any last minute details. And since he is not in my barn, not sure I want to be responsible as owner.

When we leased a horse for eventing, I signed the Usea form “agent” and my name next to it as the owner. This was how the actual owner of the horse told me to do the form. Not sure if it’s the same for usdf.

It’s a nightmare… plain and simple. USDF makes this ridiculously harder than it ever needs to be. USDF loves their rules and collecting their fees.

If I’m remembering correctly the owner of the horse also needs to be a USDF member as well. Of course in our situation my client who was leasing the horse had to pay for a membership for the owner… who didn’t want the membership and was very frustrated. (Owner was from hunter/jumper land and thought we were scamming her I think.)

If you register the lease with USDF, the owner does not have to be a member, as the lessee is considered the “owner” for show purposes for the duration of the lease. I registered a lease with one mare precisely because the owner was out of the country, didn’t want to renew her USDF membership, and wouldn’t be around to sign all the show paperwork.

Yes, it’s a giant pain in the butt, an extra fee, and you have to stay on top of the paperwork. I let it lapse, forgot, entered a show, and those scores were nullified because of the discrepancy in the entry paperwork and lapsed lease recording. So frustrating.

Zero advice, but I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your horse with someone and thinking about this in advance!

I’ve been lucky to get to ride more trained horses (informally) and learn from them, and try to share with others when it can help. So advantageous for everyone!

Thank you. Yes, good for everyone - Bravo is happy not being asked to do FEI, lessor is showing recognized for the first time end of month, and while I miss him, I can visit whenever I like!

SO, she is recording the lease with both DF and EF, (we wrote a new extended one to cover the entire show year), doing the paperwork, has talked to the show manager, etc. It will work out just fine.

And the owner has to complete the annual Safe Sport training as well.
