My friend is showing at the Championship, region 7, in 3 weeks… She is in the FEI division. She wants to start a loading dose of Adequan now…What is the time frame can she show with this… also she may need to clip right before the show. How long before the show can she give him Demosidan . Thanks
I assume you mean FEI classes in the national show (under USEF rules, not FEI). You should direct your friend to this link: https://www.usef.org/documents/drugsmeds/2015/drugsmedsguidelines15_web.pdf
It covers withdrawal time for short-acting sedatives. As far as I know, the only rule on Adequan is that it can’t be given within 12 hours of competition.
Thanks, I will pass it on
IF the class is held using FEI rules, this FEI site has quite a lot of good info, including:
The following substances are not currently listed on the FEI Prohibited Substances List and may be used during events:
- B-vitamins, amino acids and electrolytes. These susbstances may be given to horses in the oral form and in many cases this is still the preferred route of administration. However in some circumstances a veterinarian may prefer to administer them intravenously or intramuscularly.
- Preventative or restorative joint therapies. Many of these products in the oral form (chondroitin, glucosamine, etc.) can be given inhe ora form and in many cases this is the preferred route of administration. However in some circumstances a veterinarian may prefer to administer joint restorative therapy intravenously or intramuscularly.
You can find the info at : https://www.fei.org/fei/cleansport/ad-h/prohibited-list
Under USEF General Rules, intermuscular (ie different withdrawal time for injections into a joint) injections at least 12 hours before horse competes. To be safe, if I was her, I’d do it a couple of days in advance. Partly so if there is any swelling/soreness in the injection site, horse will feel good by the time the show starts on Thursday.
Does anyone find it disturbing that they actually have to write a RULE that prohibits use of LSD, Cocaine, Metamphetamines, etc in horses? Oh boy…
What would cocaine possibly achieve!!! Imagine what hunter classes would look like if the horses were all on crack…

A cracked out hunter class might be kinda funny! All joking aside, though, the USEF rules apply to all disciplines and breeds that fall under USEF governance. That includes Arabs and Saddlebreds, which unfortunately are the likely reason those specific rules are in place. It used to be a “thing” among the shadier trainers to make the horses more alert and snorty. Not sure if the snortiness came from the coke itself, or how they administered it.
cocaine is also used as a local anesthetic ( is still used so in nasal surgery
and dont forget the rebound crash

I understand it’s the crash afterwards.
Here is a discussion of the dormosedan gel withdrawal.

Personally I would not give any sedative less than a week before a competition, both because of the testing and because I wouldn’t want it interfering with my preparation.
