Showing Gaited Horses Anyone?

I have a Rocky Mountain that I would like to start showing western this year. I’ve noticed that many show them english. Is that a more preferred style? Can I still ride two-handed if I show western (as it is a more breed suitable style of holding the reins)? Any suggestions or advice?

Go over to the gaitedhorsesenseonline.com board. You will probably be able to get a whole lot more answers over there. Good Luck!

My buddy shows Spotteds and he shows both Western and Saddleseat. One hand for Western, I think the RMH people have a website that might have standards, but from what I gather from my buddy it isn’t a true draped rein used on the neck, more of a one handed indirect rein or even a one handed bridged rein (I think they frown on that one). You are best off to go to a gaited board or start getting the RMH magazine for breed specific info.

This is the organization that governs Mountain Horse shows http://www.unitedmountainhorse.org/

Wether you show English or Western will mostly depend on your horse and how competitive you want to be. Some horses will be more naturally suited to one division or another. Best to read the rules and then attend a show and watch. You could also look up videos on Youtube.

When you show a Mountain Horse Western and it is over the age of 5 it does need to be shown in a curb bit and your reins must be in one hand. A western horse is relaxed and an “economical” move that is shown in a “less contained” frame than horses shown in the English classes.

In the English divisions it is divided basically by the showiness of the horse, from Country Trail Pleasure up through Trail Pleasure and Classic Pleasure to Park Pleasure being the showiest horses.

Thanks for that Renae.
