Showing welsh pony in hand

I’m heading to a small local welsh breed show this weekend with a clients coming 3yo welsh/wb class and will be showing her in the halter/showmanship classes.

What is appropriate for her to wear? Halter? Bridle?? Plain lead? I really don’t think a big clunky chain would help me out at all.

As she has clipped per hunters, should u be braiding her mane?? These are the welsh half bred classes so u assume not everyone is full mane and fetlocks ect??

I’ve never been to a welsh breed show so am not sure what to expect!!

Is it a halter or a showmanship class? Very different.

I’m a Welsh Pony & Cob breeder, trainer and judge, so feel like I’m qualified to answer your questions.

Normally, the Half Welsh are braided and presented in an english show bridle, much like the turnout for the hunter divisions. I do not like to see chains used on the leads…unless it is a traditional Newmarket chain used with the stallions and Section Bs. Some exhibitors braid the tail…and others don’t. As a judge, it doesn’t make a difference to me one way or the other. Braiding is not mandatory.

One thing you’ll want to make sure is that your Half Welsh trots out well in hand and stands quietly for the conformation evaluation. She can be presented in the same turnout in your showmanship class as your halter class.

If you’re showing down in the States, you’ll find the exhibitors friendly and helpful. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask someone and just let them know it’s your first time. Good luck!

I show my Half Welsh either braided or with a neatly pulled mane (I really DO try to braid, but some shows I take 8-12 ponies and it’s just a lot of ponies to braid if some are only doing halter!). I take the feathers off and bang the tail. If I’m using a chain, I make sure to use very small ones meant for in hand showing. The big ugly stud chains look terrible. I know your show is this weekend, but for the future, this is a super book: http://www.lulu.com/shop/gretchen-aitken/a-guide-to-in-hand-showing-of-your-welsh-pony-welsh-cob-or-part-welsh/paperback/product-20696347.html;jsessionid=19793D3777A6AC213CC3145311C49280

Good luck!

Showing in both pony isn’t started yet so will do all the in hand stuff we can

That’s the newmarket chain I was talking about above. http://www.justforponies.com/ponynewmarketchain.aspx

If I were doing both, and with a half welsh, I’d plait and show in a bridle.
