Has anyone heard any rumblings with the new surge in COVID cases in many areas of the country if shows are going to start cancelling again? The indoor circuit?
I imagine that it’s too early to call, but that it’ll be a possibility. Individual states’ policies will probably dictate what happens. If the state bars gatherings of more than 10 people or institutes a quarantine procedure for visitors, the horse show will have to abide by that.
So let’s wear our masks and not be flippin’ stupid.

All three of the big indoors shows announced earlier (beginning of this month? it’s all blurred together a bit) that they’d be making a joint announcement in early July. At the very least, I’d think they’d have to run without spectators. The rules in the different states hosting might effect that, too–I can see DC prohibiting anything at Capital One for a while.
And some stuff still hasn’t reopened–PGEC is still closed, so I’d imagine both Cap Challenge and WIHS are waiting to hear what’s going on there.
The July West Palms shows that were moved from Huntington Beach (CA) to Hansen Dam (San Fernando Valley) are now being moved again due to a pull back by either the city or county, both Los Angeles.

The first one of the two consecutive shows originally in HB is now cancelled and the second one, together with the Gold Coast(?) that was to run the week after, have been moved to Showpark. The other West Palms shows that was supposed to be in HB is now also at Showpark. Since that show was supposed to run some LA county medal finals and Showpark is two counties away, in San Diego, those medal finals have been moved to a show at Hansen Dam in October. (*)

One thing I’m seeing is that management teams that normally use multiple facilities are consolidating to one or two bc that makes the COVID compliance less cumbersome.
(*) For those not familiar with Southern California, those West Palms shows first moved about an hour north and then two hours south from there. Thus anyone who could show at Hansen Dam while commuting from home probably won’t be able to do that while showing at Showpark, unless they want to do a lot of driving.
And I don’t blame the management team at all. They’re trying to operate as best they can. In fact, it seems that several of the management teams are helping each other to navigate these uncertain waters.

We here in the PNW seem to be in the “hurry up and wait” mode for any show that hasn’t cancelled yet, as we wait for state and county officials to move to Stage 3 which will allow bigger shows (more than 50 total humans on the grounds). I’ve seen FB posts from western discipline events that they are still on ( barrel/roping/rodeo type—not performance shows) and I’m a bit puzzled how they are still operating. All the big July H/J shows are cancelled in Oregon, and the late July/August WA shows are in hold mode. If cases keep building here in OR/WA as they have been, I suspect no shows will happen until fall. And I worry that if shows can go ahead, they’ll be overwhelmed by eager participants!

The shows in California that are going forward in Temecula (Riverside County), San Juan Capistrano (Orange County), Paso Robles (San Luis Obispo County) are sold out and seem to be going well. People are wearing masks and social distancing. Hopefully they can continue. There may be more, but those are the ones I am aware of. Los Angeles and Ventura Counties are more strict and have more hoops to jump through.

HITS horse shows in Saugerties ordered to stop
Not sure of the case at the western competitions you are seeing, but around here they started earlier than other disciplines as they could easily have people haul in, run their barrels (rope the steer, run the reining pattern), and haul out. No course changes needed. Placings done after the end of the weekend. And they called them “BBQs”…
Only the first week, though. Next 5 weeks are still a go.

Not according to the statement from Tom S yesterday or the online system. They are restarting next week. The barn I know that was there ended up leaving because they were only planning to stay for one week.
The quarantine has me questioning now, as I know multiple people from “hot spot states” heading to Chicago, NY, and Traverse. A lot of these states are issuing mandatory 14 day quarantines from hot spot states, so are horse shows supposed to monitor entries? The state? The person coming in being responsible and actually quarantining?
i know it’s a dumb question because we all know they aren’t going to turn away money or people AND people driving 15 hours to jump sticks aren’t going to quarantine, but it makes you question at what point does USEF throw its hands up and say they’ve been defeated and we will try again later.

Gotcha. I had been led to believe that they had been allowed to continue. That info was not clear. What a nightmare

It was a confusing mess with mixed messages most of the day, that’s for sure! :encouragement:
They should look at their entry blanks and if they are from a banned state, enforce the quar. but that isn’t going to happen

Well, as of today, the Retired Racehorse Project TB Makeover has been cancelled. It’s actually rolling over to 2021 to be more precise. I think it’s a good idea. I will be competing in 2021 now.

I was thrilled to see someone in the horse community exercise such good judgement. The fact that they announced a plan for next year at the same time as announcing this year’s cancellation was much appreciated.
