Showsheen on a dog

I have a poodle mix (stray that I found) and I was wondering if I put a little showsheen on her after her bath if it would help prevent mats and make clipping easier? Are there any issues with using showsheen on a dog?

I’d used Showsheen professionally for over twenty years. It was my “trade secret” - my baths/grooms would stay very nice for a good week longer than the competition. Never had a reaction or a problem with cats, dogs, bunnies, or rats. I do dilute by 1/3-1/2 and get a good job.

…just don’t get it on a tile or linoleum floor. You will wipe out and die.

Many moons ago, I used to groom dogs to help make ends meet.

There were a few dogs that just had that cotton candy, tangly, always knotted coat.

I would spray them with showsheen and I never had any problems with skin reactions, but I did get a lot of compliments from their owners saying they their pet was nice and soft, their coat did not hold on to as much dirt, …well the same great things that it does for horses.

I use vetrolin shine on my dog all the time. It helps him not pick up burrs and branches when we’re out hiking. Love it! I’m thinking of trying miracle groom on him later this week, too.

I groom professionally and we use Show Sheen, Cowboy Magic, Laser Sheen or Satin Sheen. My clients all love it.

I mist a little on them (I put it in a different spray bottle that creates a fine mist) before I finish drying them. It helps get any tangles out with the dryer and makes everything easier to brush out.

A word of caution, my poodle’s breeder (she shows mainly cream poodles) said that the silicone based sprays seem to make the sun burn light coats and can make the hairs more brittle and prone to breaking. This isn’t a huge deal if you keep the coat relatively short, but if you’re trying to grow a longer coat, you may want to avoid them.

OMG so true of all the sprays. Have nearly killed myself with Magic Touch. Most definitely do not let your dogs jump off the grooming table as the floors can be so dangerously slippery (not that they should jump down anyway…)

Shucks even carpet if you’re wearing socks. I have done The Bambi more than once on carpet.

Question: I use ShowSheen maybe once a month. At TSC I could only find an aerosol can, not the white bottle I’m use to. I really want the simple bottle so I can dilute it.

I loved how it made the horses’ tails and want that same teflon coating on my Pap’s furnishings, but it’s not working. Do I need to apply more often? If I apply it heavier, his coat looks oily

I know it is drying and some handlers don’t use it because the drying causes breakage (never had a problem with Arabian tails).

I can ask my breeder - she has two papillons (one is a brand new sassy little puppy bitch…so cute!) Can you get Magic Touch (usually sold at dog shows?) I think it’s lighter than Show Sheen (and I dilute it) but I like the smooth/slippery “teflon” effect it gives…

I think there are some coat types that just don’t get the Teflon effect. My little Blenheim Cavalier bitch doesn’t get the effect, but my tricolor dog does. A Pap’s coat tend to have a very soft and fine texture, and it’s easy to overapply anything.

About the drying effect - the sprays seals the hair. That means that nothing will get in the hair shaft, so you must be certain to condition well, and then apply to a damp coat. I spray a diluted amount lightly and brush through, and that works for me. Even so, I’ll only apply the stuff to the back of the ears on Patty (my Blen Cavalier) while she’s still showing, but since Willie’s a retired GCH, I just go to town on him. For what it’s worth, using Show Sheen more heavily hasn’t changed his coat in the least - it is not longer, shorter, thicker or thinner than it was when we were campaigning. I’m wondering whether Show Sheen really damages a coat or not - at least, in the manner in which I use it. (My little poodle has always had a weekly dose of Show Sheen. He grows tons of coat.)

Ooooooo…I had never thought of that!

Lars does UKC breed on occasion and show sheen may have to find its way into my show bag.

Thanks for the comments. She is my first poodle type dog (always had short haired dachshunds in the past) and the whole coat upkeep/clipping thing is new. I am getting better at clipping and she no longer has a week of bad hair days after a hair cut.

FWIW, some coats just won’t get that Teflon feeling. It depends on their hair type which can vary even within breed. My poodle (a blue) has a soft, wavy coat that is delightful to pet and cuddle with, but ridiculously terrible to groom - especially in full show coat. My mom’s poodle (a black) has a dense, curly coat that is more slick. If I put Show Sheen on it, it does get that Teflon feel. My guy’s coat just feels gross.

Thanks for the help. It worked great and she looks wonderful for Christmas (she goes with us to visit family so she has to look nice!).
