Sidewinder disease

Thread

Never heard of it
and let me guess
you can tell us where to buy this wonderful supplement, right? Funny, you posted almost exactly the same thing on barrel horse.

The only other place I can find a mention is on the Pathogenes website
where they’re hawking Oroquin-10. You’ll find people aren’t really receptive to a “cure” that hasn’t had a scientific, peer reviewed, double blind trial. If that’s the “supplement” you’re talking about

First of all, yes that was me. If you think I am trying to “sell” this supplement, your wrong. Im not. I just wanted to talk to other people that have horses diagnosed with this disease. Theres no symptoms of this disease, it just hits them and theres no cure or real test to say that they have it. Theres no need to have attitude when all I am trying to do is talk to people about this disease and trying to see what they have tried or witnessed. Its hard to watch your horse have this disease and no longer be able to ride them.

What is sidewinder disease?

How do you know your horse has been “hit” if there are no symptoms?

My horses vet tested him for many different things. Took blood tests and videos, which she showed the videos to a neru specialist at Cornell and he said it looks to be sidewinder disease. Its a neurological problem, that affects the fuction of his hind legs/hips. My horse will walk with his hind end to one side or the other but then will be straight for a few days and sometimes one of his back legs will slant in-ward towards his other. He isn’t like this everyday tho.

I have heard that side winder disease can really affect the horses nerve in their spine/ back end

Those would be symptoms.

When I went to take my horse out of his stall his leg was severly inward and was walking to one side. his hip looked like it was almost popped out. this happened over night. My vet explained to me that symptoms would be more like when a horse is lame, sore or grumpy because of lyme. Not what suddenly hit your horse when he can barely stand on his own with out leaning against the wall

hoping we don’t spend a lot of time discussing the definition of the word ‘symptoms’

It sounds like wobblers? How is it different from that?

Its not wobblers, I already asked my vet about that. I cant remember exactly what she said since it has been awhile (almost a year) since he was diagnosed. Side winder disease doesnt cause a malformation in the spine. Side winder only affects the hind end of your horse. Also, side winder disease I was told normally only affects older horses. My horses from legs are the same as they used to be, and normally one of his hind legs are fine, the other just slants in-ward. (This switches on and off)

Sidewinders? What is it and how is it diagnosed?

Maybe it’s like the movie, “snakes on a plane” only it’s “snakes on a horse”???

How come when I google it there are no hits, for any horse disease called that?

Exactly why I made this thread, was to talk to people whos horse have been diagnosed with it. Its not a common disease, its not in the “books”. Vets can’t explain why it happens.

exactly why I created this thread

Can you ask your vet which specialist at Cornell it was
who identified the Sidewinder Disease? Maybe we can
get that vet to tell us all more about this disease.

A disease with no symptoms, no known diagnostic test, and no known cause? And is treated with a supplement? And a “great” supplement at that? Pray tell, what is IN this supplement, how long has the horse been treated, and to what degree are the “symptoms” (signs is probably a better term) gone and over what period of time have the improvements been seen?
