*sigh* is there such a thing as corn-free, soy-free, oat-free grain?

Really straight MSM; https://www.bulkfoods.com/search?orderby=position&controller=search&orderway=desc&search_query=MSM

I believe that the Select the Best product is 99.8% pure or something similar too.

Just a side note, HorseTech also carries the only MSM made in the USA. All other MSM is made in China. MSM requires quite a lot of water to make, and water in China isn’t so pure. If you’re getting a HorseTech custom blend, it might be worth using their MSM too.

Absolutely. If HT can make me a blend with everything-- that is the easiest route.

Baloney.

I have Horsetech add MSM to my custom product, it is cheap and one less scoop per day. Why not. My other horses on it are using a giant 20 lb bucket from somewhere but the cost was so negligible I stuck it in that horse’s product directly.

The first thing that came up on the google search was this one, which also claims to be the only msm made in the usa - and it took me all of 2 seconds to find it. Don’t waste my time.

OptiMSM is the same MSM that is sold by HorseTech. Your time isn’t being wasted.

You don’t have to get it from Horsetech, though.

My horse is allergic to most feeds as well. Timothy is included in her allergy shot serums. She also can’t have carrots or molasses! I give her a feed from McCullys called Alam. It’s a very basic feed. I spoke directly with their staff veterinarian and faxed him the allergy test results from my horse. He took the time to review all of it and talk to me about everything in the feed. I also had a similar experience with Omega brand supplements to find a safe probiotic for her. Good luck! It was very frustrating at first, but I found people were very helpful on the phone.

For those following along at home, HorseTech came through with a custom supplement that is their High Point Grass/Mixed Hay daily vitamin/mineral as the base plus the supplements I wanted to add…

-10 grams of MSM
-30 mg of additional Biotin
-1,600 IU of additional Natural Vitamin E
-20 gram equivalent of Nutramino: 10g Lysine, 5g Methionine and 2g Threonine

It ended up costing just a smidge less than the McCaulley M10 PLUS buying the MSM, Biotin, Vitamin E, and Tri-Amino separately. And it’s a lot less to eat/store than the M10 as it’s just a much less bulky product.

So my plan is to grab the 1 bag of M10 I bought tomorrow. Mix up the feed bags with that pluse the loose supplements and use that up… and then switch to the custom HT blend. That will be fewer things to mix in and a smaller bag of feed to deal with.

For now he’s going to start with a daily dose (split into 2 meals) of…
-2lbs rice bran
-1 lb beet pulp shreds
-2 lbs barley
-1 cup flax
-2.5 lbs of McCauley M10

Plus 5 flakes of orchard grass hay. Plus a supplement container in one of those meals with his antihitimine, MSM, Vitamin E, BioFlax, and nutramino.

Once I use up the M10, it’ll be…
-2lbs rice bran
-1 lb beet pulp shreds
-2 lbs barley
-1 cup flax

Same hay.

And then a supplement container that is just his antihisitime plus 140 oz of the custom suppement. No more ordering a bunch fo separate supplements tubs that run out at different times. I like that.

He starts allergy shots tomorrow.

P.S.- If you send an inquiry to HT through the website/email, be aware that it might not go through. Once I called them, I immediately got excellent service and a less-than-24-hour-turnaround to my inquiry.

And I had forgotten that I get 10% off at HT as a USRider member. Which brings the total to UNDER the M10+loose supplements but a more noticeable amount. SCORE!

Sounds like quite a big change. Will it be made gradually? Would a probiotic be helpful in preventing any tummy upset?

Luckily this horse is not prone to colic/stomach upset. I am going to transition gradually. That being said, what he currently eats is really not at all good for him (that feed is soy soy soy) so I do want to get him switched over as quickly as I can.

I guess McCaulley only read PART of my email before responding… because it contains oats and alfalfa?! :frowning:

I have it, and those are lower down on his allergy list… so I am going to go ahead and feed it until the HorseTech blend comes in.

Grr… reading comprehension!?!

Dropped off 3 days worth which is 3/4 his old feed and 1/4 his new feed. Then going to do 3 days of 1/2 and 1/2, and then switching to 100% new feed regimen.

Also dropped off some molasses and applesauce in case he doesn’t like the taste-- but it SMELLS and looks good to me… and hopefully he won’t mind it. Cross fingers he eats and accepts the feed switch.

So it’s now been just about 3 weeks that he’s been off the commercial feed. Hay switched a week ago (and OMG does he love the new hay). He is also on the cyproheptadine and I started allergy serum as well. So I didn’t do the ā€œtry one thing at a timeā€ because I am anxious to alleviate his symptoms. Symptom-wise he’s doing very well. He also seems to really like what he’s eating, cleans up his meals no problem. I’ve been bringing it to the barn in baggies, pre-mixed and they are feeding it with no issues. I am thrilled about the HT supplement in particular because it’s saved me making up supplement containers and I like knowing he gets all his vitamins/minerals in such a low-volume way. Especially because I have to drag the baggies to the barn

Now the question-- I do think he looks a bit ribby and he is a little lower energy than I’d like (this is an ongoing thing with him, he’s a pretty stoic slow-going guy). I’d like to up his feed a little. I am thinking what I should up is the rice bran?

I have no feed suggestions, but I want to say I am happy to hear he is doing well and also ask if you are steaming his hay? How is that going, if you are?

I would give him all the new hay he can eat first
