Silver and varnish roan gene question

Hi all.

I have a coming 6yo RPSI gelding who is half Knabbstrupper. When he was born, he was bay with black legs, mane and tail (and the hint of a blanket on his rump). By the time he turned 3yo, the blanket was well defined, the mane and tail were completely silver/blonde, his legs a chocolate color, and his whole body roaming out. I had him genetically tested for color, and it came back bay with the varnish roan, silver, and leopard pattern genes active. Fast forward to last year (5yo), and all the silver hairs are turning black again and the white hairs on the body are diminishing! The mane is completely black and the tail is at least 50% (and still darkening). When you look at individual hairs, it appears to be darkening from the root (versus new hairs growing in with the different color). I’ve always thought that these genes would cause progressive lightening…so, this pattern of darkening is truly unexpected. Has anyone with a leopard or silver gene expressed horse had this happen to them? Does the color cycle throughout life? Thoughts? TIA.

This post is useless without pics

Varnish roan is the same as the LP (leopard complex pattern) allele. The visible varnishing/roaning is a result of LP.

One of the PATN alleles has to be present for there to be any spotting/blanketing. Offhand I don’t remember which one of the 2 testable ones causes the pattern you’re seeing, or in which combination with LP/lp. But varnishing is progressive. All the non-pattern areas of the horse will progressively varnish. Any dark spots in the blanket pattern won’t though.

But LP also often causes a “color shift” (sometimes called bronzing) and makes the normal colors (bay, black, chestnut) look “abnormal”, such as turning manes/tails a silvery shade, lightening black points, and even to the extent of making them the “wrong” color. For example, this mare is a tested grulla

The color shifts don’t necessarily stay constant, or progress evenly. That’s likely what’s going on with yours.

Haha that’s awesome! Yes, it happens.

I miss the silver mane and hope it makes a return appearance in the future!

He’s by the Holstein stallion Orleandro and out of Marti Gras GSF (she’s by Morpheus). Has your guy’s color shifted much?
