Currently I am feeding: Soaked timothy pellets, Adeptus Augment (vit-min), PP Vitamin E (4000iu+) & Metabolic Support (Magnesium/Chromium), 1 cup ground Flax, 1 teaspoon salt and 1 cup of canola oil. Said horsie has happily eaten this for about a year, but is now lackluster about it. With hot weather here, it’s simply not good for him to eat 1/2 of it and then maybe get around to the rest of it later in the day (or not, which has been the case). After speaking with Dr. Valberg and the nutritionist at both Purina and Triple Crown, their suggestions are: 3 cups Purina Enrich L & 3 1/2 cups Amplify 30% OR 3 cups Triple Crown 30%, top with their rice bran oil (no exact amount given), respectively. I’m just not convinced that will do it, trying to decide if I should just tube the oil into him everyday (that was a messy endeavor yesterday), give the switch a try, or go the Alcar route. ??? Any thoughts/experiences for those of you who have been on this road longer than moi?
Are you on Facebook? If so, there is a PSSM Group on there that’s super helpful.
The other thing that caught my eye (and I could be wrong but people on that group would know) is that I thought chromium wasn’t good for PSSM horses, but I can’t recall why.
Sorry I’m not more help! I’m a member of that group because my gelding was suspected PSSM but its been ruled out via hair sample and biopsy.
“I’m not convinced that will do it”
What is going to be missing? Don’t fall into the trap of “if it’s not difficult it can’t be effective”
I would not ‘tube’ a horse daily, that’s a lot of stress. If he is not eating the food he used to, I would think about why. Maybe ulcers, maybe the oil flavor was off.
Try following one the advised diets and see how the horse does.

As far as “not going to do it”, I mean all the nutrients he is currently getting versus the proposed new diet. And I knew someone would call me out on “tubing” him, perhaps I should have written “syringed”(which to me could mean injected, which it was NOT) or “orally administered”. Trust me, said horsie was hardly stressed, lol, it was just time consuming and a bit of a mess. My main question, though, is for the forum experts on this current diet versus the proposed new diet…what they currently use and what works. TIA!

I am on Facebook but couldn’t ever find that group other than one that was mostly quarter horses. This horse is mildly symptomatic, negative for hair, haven’t done the muscle but did have a tying up episode at a show awhile back and everything else “fits”, although mildly. I figure the diet can’t hurt.
I ended up switching to AlCAR plus a small about of Triple Crown Omega Max Flax. The mare stopped eating the oil and didn’t care for straight rice bran. So far she is doing better on the ALCAR than she did on the oil. YMMV, of course.

The proposed new diet is more nutritious than what you’re currently doing. 3c of those products is about 1lb, which is the standard feeding rate for most horses. There is far more nutrition in 1lb of a ration balancer than any single v/m supplement.
You’d likely want to continue adding Vit E (I’d switch to UltraCruz, so much cheaper), and whether you continue the Augment or not would remain to be seen.
Then you’d (re)figure out the extra fat, either as suggested with the fat supplements, or some oil.

Where do you purchase ALCAR and what amount do you feed? What were the signs of her “doing better” on the ALCAR? What is a “small amount” of TC Omega Max? (that’s also what I feed) TIA!

I was hoping you’d chime in, JB! If the proposed ration balancer is more nutritious, then why would I want to possibly continue with the Augment? Where do I find UltraCruz Vitamin E? (I agree that Vit E is probably going to still be needed no matter what the diet, we don’t have pasture here) How much oil do you think would be necessary? I think I’d continue with the flax, which is Triple Crown Omega Max like Shotenstar also feeds. TIA!
Ack, sorry, I meant the ALCAR! No, you’d drop the Augment

For $.13/day you could feed 8000IU if you needed to, using the 4lb container
How much oil - the horse will have to tell you that.
Not sure if I’d jump to feed the Amplify. Might not be enough to be an issue, but it’s got corn, wheat and molasses in the ingredient list, which make it have: Starch 14.50% & Sugars 5.00%. The oil, rice bran and flax that it provides are all good for the PSSM horse of course, but I would tend to lean towards feeding something more like Haystack Special Blend (timothy and alfalfa hay, canola oil, flax, beet pulp, & rice bran - with no fillers) + extra rice bran and/or flax if needed so you don’t have the added starches/sugars. Here’s a spec sheet on Amplify: http://www.ranchoutlet.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/amplify.pdf
I get the ALCAR from Foxden and feed one scoop per day for a 1,200 mare. She gets 2 cups per day of the Omega Max. I also feed Vit E and magnesium, with the base being Triple Crown Senior. Not the traditionally recommended diet, but it is working for us. The mare has one copy of the PSSM gene and is only mildly affected.

Thanks for the information! I think I’ll slowly switch over as my current supplies run out.
My horse gets 4-6 qts triple crown senior, 8,000 iui ultracruz’s vitamin e, 4 tbsp of magnesium oxide, 2 tbsp of alcar from bulk supplements through amazon, and a splash of oil once a day to help with vitamin e absorption. This is all split into two feedings, every other day I feed lunch too and scoop up any leftover crumbs or powders and mix in with some water to ensure he eats everything.
