My cat has been having nose bleeds so I took her in to my vet today. All indications are that she has a tumor in her nasal/sinus cavity. I have been referred to an internal medicine vet for further diagnosis/treatment. She will be going in as soon as I can set up the appointment. From what I can gather on the internet, this is a grim prognosis. I am very disheartened. Has anyone else had experience with this? Other than the nose bleeds, Button seems her normal sweet, perky self. I already have one CRF kitty that is getting sub-Qs once a day so I’ve been preparing myself for her eventual passing, but this took me completely by surprise.
Unfortunatley I see this on a daily basis.
If you can afford it, get a CT done followed by a rhinoscopy or nasal flush. Some tumors are chemo responsive (ie lymphoma),others are mildly responsive to antiinflammatories or steroids. Your cat will need to have a biopsy done to tell if a.) its malignant and b.) if it is, the type of cancer to see if its managable.
Ive known some cats to do quite well (one with lymphoma lived 4+ years wth treatment), however Id have to say more often than not - its a type of cancer that gives mild responses to antiinflammatories and life expectancy isnt long.
Jingles for your kitty!!! I hope its not a tumor at all!
Jingles from Wisconsin!!
sad jingles
I had mine pts this morning for a terrible nasal discharge, but he was very old too. It doesn’t help.
I’m a newbie so my jingles aren’t very powerful yet, but sending them your way. How old is your girl?
Crazy cat lady friend had a mom cat develop one. She spent big bucks having tumor removed. Kitteh lived another 2 months. Not even two months later the mom cat’s 9 year old son developed one. This time she went with palliative care and just a month after the diagnosis my friend had boy kitteh pts.
Sorry my experience has been so grim
Good luck to your kitteh.
I had a 16 year old cat develop this years ago. He was given prednisone as that was the only treatment available at the time. He lived about another year and then the discharge got worse and he was clearly not as comfortable and then I had him euthanized. He was a cat I saved and bottle fed as an infant so it was a very sad day. He did not have a mean bone in his body and went out with the same dignity he had displayed from day one. Good luck to you and your kitty.
Thanks for the comments. I have an appointment set up for the 12th. Vet is on vacation next week. All of you are confirming what I’ve found through research. This sucks.
My cat was teary eyed, and then developed blood coming out of the eye. I looked closely and saw she was bleeding on the nose. Granted not IN the nose, but had small pinpricks on the nose.
I changed foods (to raw liver for dinner) and the teary eye, and blood discharge went away. What I think was happening was something in the food was causing allergies, she’d swipe at her eye and scratch her nose and somehow the blood made it made it into the eye and dripped out.
I still give her one can of cat food in the morning (though a different brand then the one she was on), but it cleared up. No more teary eye, no blood in the eye drip, no swiping at here eye.
[Today though, everyone is squinting, human and cats. Its “beautiful” weather, but something in the air is bothering us. I actually think the humidity is easier to breath than these dry days where the air feels full of dirt.]
