Size 6" Mouth - Gag/Elevator Bits?

I’ve spent 2 days trying to source a bit online and so I thought I’d ask for help!

My draft cross just chewed threw his 6" Happy Mouth 2-ring elevator bit…so I need to toss it out and get something similar in metal.
No more Happy Mouth for him!

He’s got a duckbill of a mouth, so he wears a 6" bit.

Looking for a double joint - either French link or oval mouth or such.

2-ring elevator/gag, or possibly a wonder bit or such gag-type with just a little bit of leverage.

A three ring is too much leverage, and while I have found those online in a size 6" - I guess I could just always attach the reins to the 2nd ring and not the 3rd ring?

thanks!

Stubben makes this one, which is a 3 ring, but as you said, maybe just use the second ring:

Their steeltec butterfly bit is nice, but tops out at 5 3/4

Cool find, Hinderella, I like that - thank you.

They are calling it a 3-ring, but it’s shanks are shorter, seems more like a 2-ring, so that’s perfect, for me anyway.

Question - would you add rubber bit guards?

I’ve seen rubber bits guards that snap open and shut, so there’s not stretching and pulling to get them on…

I haven’t used bit guards, but I’m sure you could try the snap on ones.
The Stubben golden wings bit has a sort of built in guard, but again, it tops out at 5 3/4. Some tack shops will let you return bits, so I suppose you could try it. It looks like this:

I love my Stubben bits. I’m fortunate that my pony wears a pretty standard 5" so I can often find them on eBay.

My draft cross measures (and wears) a 6" loose ring snaffle. However, I use the Golden Wings gag in a 5 3/4" size with no issues, due to the built in guard.

I just ordered some of those snap-on bit guards to try with a different 5 3/4" bit. I hope they work!

I find the Stubben bits fit more generously than some brands. My cob takes a 5.75" in most bits, but is comfortable and happy in a 5.5" stubben (we have a baucher and pelham in 5.5 and a loose ring in 5.75).

Cob doesn’t like the golden wings bits, however. The wings would tend to get “sucked into” his super fleshy lips and he’d fuss and gape his mouth.

I wouldn’t use bit guards with that stubben “3 ring”. The way the post curves where the mouthpiece connects would likely push bit guards into the horse’s face too much and drive them nuts. It’s a bit of an interesting cheekpiece design, but I have a friend whose mare prefers it to the NS “Universal” cheek, so there’s that.
