Size of trailer box stall

How big is the typical box stall? I’m not necessarily talking about the 2+1 ‘box’. More interested in what size box to comfortably haul 16.3H WB? What size box do commercial haulers have?
TIA!

It always depends on the type of trailer. If a large, commercial trailer hauled by a semi, more like 8 feet wide, and the length of a regular trailer stall, like 9 or 10 feet. If a regular four horse trailer converted to a couple of box stalls, hauled by a one ton truck, the trailer is not as wide. Mine is 7 1/2 feet wide. I have three box stalls, in a converted 6 horse slant trailer. The box stalls are about 9 feet long, but vary slightly. Since I rarely tie a horse in there, they are free to move around and choose how to stand to travel. Most choose to arrange themselves on an angle, to give themselves maximum room across the diagonal of the box stall. It doesn’t sound like a lot of room, as compared to a stall in a barn. But it’s adequate. And it is amazing how they can turn themselves around in there, even a big horse.

This is a question that you could pose to your choice of commercial shippers when you call to book your horse in for a trip, to get the exact dimensions of the box stalls in their rig. But it will be something like the above, and your horse will fit.

For my 2+1- I wanted the box stall dividers but went as short on the floor as I could while still being able to have a box in the front for emergencies if I needed to fit everyone in the rig at once (when I got it I had 2 big & 1 little horses, now I have 1 big horse & 1 pony.) The straight load area is 6’8”W x 10’9”L when open, and the front is 6’8” x 6’3” and is mostly used as an oversize dressing room/staging area. Huge? No. Comfortable for my purposes? Oh yes.

I’ve been meaning to ask this! I am wondering if I can get away with an 8x8 stall in the trailer for a mare and foal on short trips… I think standard in a trailer is more like 9’ long and 6’8" wide.
Most nose to tail in straight hauls are 10 - 11’

Thanks for the responses! I have a feeling 9’ is ideal, I found a rig with a 8’ front box and several 16’ stocks with center gate (2 x 8’ boxes), trying to decide if that’s big enough for a big horse box stall.
