SJ Height Question Intermediate Level

Occasionally I come across horse sale ads, articles etc. and its often listed that horse has competed 3`9" or gone through intermediate.

At last glance at rules, U.S. levels go in 4" increments minus advanced.
Training 33" Prelim 37" Int 311" Adv 41"

CIC/CCI* is 3`9"

So CCI** would be?

Feel free to correct or update me, again strictly speaking about sj heights. Thanks.

I think it’s just that for whatever reason, we tend to use increments of 3" when talking about jump heights. For example, BN becomes 2’6, Novice 3’, and Prelim 3’6. Plus a lot of people straight up never read the rules, of course.

Also, if you are advertising or writing for a non-eventing audience, 3’9" is a more normal competition height than 3’11". We eventers are weird that way.

according to the rule book

CIC*/CCI* is 1.15m

CIC**/CCI** is 1.2m

CIC***/CCI*** is 1.25m

CIC****/CCI**** is 1.3m

OR

3’7"
3’9"
4’1"
4’ 2 1/2"

So Intermediate IS 3’9 - but there is both the 2-inch fudge factor for terrain, and the rule that 2 fences will be 3’11". But not the whole course.

Lower level go up at 4" increments, but not past Prelim.

Those don’t quite match up though … Prelim (3’7") is roughly 1.10 meters, while 1.15m is approximately 3’9", 1.2m is 3’11", 1.25m is 4’1", and 1.3 m is 4’3" …

As someone who hasn’t (yet!) competed above Training, I always thought the 1* XC height was roughly equivalent to Prelim and 2* to intermediate, so do these heights apply only to the SJ?

I used an online calculator -

110cm is 3’6"

115cm is 3 feet 7 1/2 inches

120cm is 3 feet 9 inches and a hair.

Correct…fixed part xc is 1.1. FEI 1* is generally like a hard national Prelim HT on xc.

Dimensions can be found in Annex B here (scroll toward the end). http://www.fei.org/sites/default/files/2015%20Eventing%20Rules%2030March2015%20-%20changes%20integrated.pdf

At the FEI ( CCI/CIC) levels, SJ heights are bigger than Cross Country heights.

At the USEF levels, BN - Prelim, SJ heights match Cross Country heights.

At the USEF levels, Int and Adv, SJ heights are bigger than Cross Country heights.

A few years ago there was a USEF rule change proposal to increase the SJ height at Prelim to match the FEI SJ height at One *, but it was voted down on the basis that the jump between Training and Prelim was already a big one, and raising SJ would just discourage people from going Prelim.

So, USEF Adv heights match FEI *** heights for both SJ and CC
USEF Int heights match FEI ** heights for both SJ and CC
USEF Prelim heights match FEI * heights for CC, but are lower (match the CC heights) for SJ
