Skip Away :(

Sad - I did not know he had a heart condition. I remember seeing him at Suffolk Downs in the Mass Cap. Really impressive horse.

Godspeed, Skippy…

one of the last Damascus sireline horses

Too young at 17!! Beautiful guy.

Tough horse, and one I thoroughly enjoyed watching run. Almost seems like another era now looking back, raced at the top level winning G1s as a 3yo, 4yo and 5yo and wasn’t afraid to travel the length and breath of the country. That duel with Cigar in the JCGC was the stuff of legends.

RIP Skippy.

Steve Haskin wrote a nice article about Skip Away and the Hines awhile ago:

RIP beautiful boy.

wow, a friend of mine just bred a mare to him like 2 days ago. hope she’s in foal.
RIP skippy :frowning:

RIP Skippy  One of my favorites…

RIP Skippy, I was floored when I read this news on the Bloodhorse. He was one of my favorites. A beloved favorite, and he always will be

I could never warm to Skip Away while he was racing. I was a HUGE fan of Cigar and I think a big part of me resented Skip Away inheriting the limelight.

But the story behind the horse was such a sweet one - you couldn’t help but love the Hines and their devotion to each other and their colt. I bet Carolyn’s brokenhearted.

Thanks for posting that, Smilton. What a beautiful, beautiful story. My heart goes out to Carolyn as she adjusts to the second biggest loss of her life. I hope that she can temper her grief with gratitude for the great ride all three of them had. I’m guessing that she will. Classy connections.

RIP Skippy. My favorite kind of race horse I just love the ones that have the grit to put it all on the floor the whole race. No pace stalkers or blistering closers. Just run their legs off racing.

Oh wow I hadn’t heard. I just photographed him last year. :frowning:

Too young. Watching his races all over again on youtube has me in tears. How could you not love this horse? Ran his eyeballs out everytime and had some of the classiest connections you could ask for. RIP Skippy.

i got the pleasure of meeting Skippy when i went to Hopewell a few years ago. What a classy, classy horse. He truly was…all class. There was no other stallion on that entire trip that amounted to the class, the temperment, and the true character of Skippy. It was a blessing to be able to meet such a horse, to get a nice muddy hug from such a horse, and to be able to hold the lead shank of such a horse. He had the kindest heart and the quietest nature. One thing i do know is that he was a beloved member of the Hopewell team and they loved that horse like a member of their family…and like many other thoroughbred farms in KY, he was permitted to go out everyday and get as muddy as he wanted. a lovely stallion indeed and i am terribly sad to hear the news

Here are some photos of a very, very muddy Skippy
