Slipped disc in dogs neck

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this and with surgery?

To make a long story short, our very large Husky/Mal who will be 10 in March has what they believe is a slipped disc in his neck. He will be having an MRI done on the 17th and if surgery is an option and recovery won’t be too hard on him then we will be going ahead with that.

Would just like to hear others experiences.

Not a slipped disc but impinging on the spinal cord from arthritic changes in the SI with a 10 yr old hound mix 80 lb dog. Losing function behind. We did do surgery and got another 18 months with him. PTS not due to spinal cord issue but cancer we believe. Quit eating and was having seizures.

No experience but how in the heck did that happen?

They can be traumatic (dog crippled after jumping off of a bed) or degenerative (aged Dachshund being the classic example)

We have another husky and when these guys play you better watch out! Figure something happened while they were out in the backyard.

I have a dog with the degenerative disc disease that is common with doxies. She didn’t need surgery but did really well with 8 weeks crate rest and honestly is happier and more comfortable than before the injury. You do have to follow the vet’s instructions to a T and make sure the pain is under control. There was rehab involved but it was definitely worth it. If you have any more specific questions feel free to pm or ask me

It can happen from what you would think is nothing. My dog jumped over a tiny ditch and blew her disc. It could have been during playing or turning and jumping wrong etc.

I highly recommend you search fb and join this group. Even if your dog doesn’t have the disc disease you can get a lot of good info here for surgery versus crate treatment etc. Dodgerslist- Disc Disease - IVDD Education & Support
