Slippery leather dressage saddle

I just bought a used dressage saddle and i really like the way it fits…however …the seat is really slippery even with my full seat breeches on. Can anyone recommend a pad or something to help give the seat some grip?

Lederbalsam leather conditioner should help with that, or there are ‘sticky seat’ sprays and pastes made for saddles and reins. Use them sparingly, they are REALLY sticky.

Conditioning it should help make it tacky like above poster mentions.

Yep. clean it and condition it. It’ll be fine.

Mine was too. I LOVE Hydrophane! It is doing wonders on mine! Definitely love it above the other hundreds of conditioners I’ve tried.

The above sound like the solution - but, I’ve often thought about how with western saddles that have suede seats, their riders don’t need grippy britches, and usually ride in jeans.

Here’s a suede cover I found. Can’t recommend the website or whether it’s still working, but this looks like a great solution to me. Especially for cold weather, when almost all saddles turn hard and slippery. (though the sheepskin savers might be even better for cold weather).

Stubben Hamanol works great too, and smells like bacon.

Tanners leather oil.

I second the lederbalsam

Is Tanners Oil available? I thought it went out of business. I would love to buy some.

You can get Tanner’s Oil on Amazon.

Passier Lederbalsam, try that.

Silicone full seat breeches. I sometimes have trouble getting in my truck that has leather seats. I have Pipers. I found that for 5.5 hours of foxhunting they had a bit too much stick. The breeches stuck to my saddle and a was able to move a bit in them so got a little chaffed. I think it was the cold weather too. My skin is dry. Generally I love them and I rarely ride for more than 3 hours let alone for more than 5.

Keep conditioning the saddle and that will help too. I like Effax Lederbalsam.

Get in the habit of a quick daily wipe down with any saddle soap. It will soften your saddle and keep it nice and grippy. No need for anything fancy or time consuming. I keep a covered tub of water (old supplement bucket) in my tack room to make it easy for myself. Takes 1 minute or less. Just do it after 90% of your rides.
