Small, economical barns near Winston-Salem, NC?

Have a student moving there who will, due to changing circumstances, be on a pretty tight budget and trying not to have to lease or sell her horse (though may have to… not decided yet).

Anyone know of anything safe and decent- doesn’t have to be fancy, and cheap? Or pasture board options around there? Drama-free barns and eventing/dressage oriented atmosphere is a plus, but not a requirement.

Any help is appreciated!

What is “cheap” to your student?

I boarded at TTC (Mocksville- about 25 min away from WFU) while I was there (pasture board was $250/mo but may have gone up a bit since I was there) AND they let me work a few days a month to work off about half my board (I had two horses). Very safe and decent, good people, Nanci Lindroth and a few other people clinic there, I’m pretty sure there are some eventers/dressage people there now.

I also boarded at High Meadows Farm (Walkertown, NC- also about 25 min away). Stall board, they don’t do pasture, board was $325/mo but again, very, very good horse people and safe facilities. Mostly dressage/hunter/pleasure riders, but there are jumps and hacking to be had.

If she

Board in the area is not super expensive anywhere.

TTC used to run a recognized event years ago, now runs unrec, has a XC course through P. Nice facility, tack shop on site, etc. It’s very do-able to board there and go to school at Wake. They also probably have some other recommendations for local facilities.

Student should also contact the equestrian club (equestrian.wfu.edu) and they may have some other ideas and recommendations. The club now runs out of Hidden K Stables in Pfafftown. They have a pony club that runs out of there, but I don’t know anybody there or much about it.

I rode some at irish oaks (a hunter barn) in Winston-Salem college, but I don’t know what they charge for board.

Thanks everyone! Definitely am familiar with TTC, I guess I didn’t realize it was so close to Winston-Salem (I am geographically challenged). I have a friend who boards there now and can ask her about the current rates/availability. Thanks for any other leads!

Lots of things out the mocksville or advance way. Hidden K didn’t have great pastures when I went but the trainer was super nice and really worked hard to provide good care. Not cheap though. still over $400/month.
Irish Oaks is super pricey (over $900), Peacock Acres is right around the corner and hunter/jumper focused but great fields, etc. Think they do the local shows with lots of kids ($500/mo), Tracy Newton has a beautiful place in mocksville in the $400 range. 4T is in Lewisville and fabulously beautiful, allows outside trainers, Tracie Schutt is there and it’s around the $500 mark. Not sure what’s going on at Deerwood.
Just have to do some digging. I’m at a perfect small farm that is all adult eventer type women. It’s perfect honestly and in the 350 range but she’s full with a waiting list.

Irish Oaks is $600 a month with a huge covered ring, outdoor ring, tack shop, lots of pasture with run ins. Www.irishoaks.com
I have a family friendly barn with event people. I could possibly have a pasture horse space.

Turns out she’s going to be living near Pfafftown, and is apparently 50 min from TTC, so that’s out.

She would honestly prefer something that is a small, family barn and not a commercial operation-- so alteringwego and shea’s mom, I’ll send you a PM about your places, thanks!

As far as price points go, I’m fairly certain she’s going to be looking for something in the $350 or under range-- and may be interested in swapping barn chores for some or all of board too (which is what she is currently doing), though not positive on that front.

Anyone else, keep the suggestions coming, thanks!

I don’t know where in Pfafftown she’s going to be living (or what “near” means!), but I drove several times from there to TTC and it was always around 35 min. With a horse trailer attached. Not sure who quoted you 50 min but you might want to have her double check google maps using addresses, not cities!

Regardless I would suggest your student call/email TTC. They know a lot of people in the area and Sean, their farm manager, also runs a hay business and has many clients in the area–he may know of something that would work.

I think Jessica McCaskill (sp) has a farm near Advance–I was there once for a clinic and it was lovely-- but I don’t know if she is full. She is a vet and may be able to refer you somewhere as well.

hopashore, she used her address to map it, and it is indeed 50 minutes. She is also well acquainted with TTC, and we have a friend there. We can ask her about other leads, too, and will- thanks.

I’ll look up Jessica McCaskill too- thanks for that lead!

Hi! I live near WS, more on the Eastern side but I’ve been barn hunting for quite a few years trying to find the perfect one.

Currently, I’m at Deerwood Farm, in south west Winston, near Clemmons. It’s very private, but more pricey. It’s around $650, but the care is excellent. The owner is getting older and is trying to downsize.

Peacock acres is near Pfafftown and I would recommend it. The trainer there was a student of the barn owner at Deerwood. Good location, the barn is nice, and it is fairly private. There are some pony kids there, but they have a handful of adult amateurs. The price is around $600 I believe? The barn owner is trying to make the facility bigger and attract more students and boarders, and is wanting to add an indoor. Again more HJ centered.

TTC is not private and can be busy with the shows. The facilities are nice and they have a tack store on site. But if your student is looking for a small facility, I wouldn’t recommend them just because they have so many boarders and students. Price is $660 for stalls, $300 for pastures. Eventing centered, and near Clemmons.

Irish Oaks is also around Pfafftown, is pricey, not really private (from what I saw around 2 years ago). Nice facilities, had a covered arena, good instructors. HJ centered. Not sure the price, but it is not cheap.

Hidden K was also near Pfafftown, but is busy. Has pony club kids, lesson kids, college riders, and then everyone else! I was there for a few months and it was chaos! However, it did have multiple rings, an indoor, wasn’t too expensive. Eventing centered. I think the board was $500?

Red Bank Stables in Germanton, north of Winston. Small barn, more western centered. Had great pastures and nice facilities. Had an outdoor ring with jumps (you had to put them up though), poles, barrels, etc. I think board was around $300-400. However, there was no trainer there that could teach any jumping/dressage/hunters.

Northwoods stable, in north Winston. The owners are super sweet and run a small rescue along with the boarding barn. They have western riders and one or two dressage riders. There used to be a pony club girl there but she is now in college. They have two rings and lots of trails, and an indoor. Nice stalls and barn. Board was $350?

That’s all that I can remember at the moment. It is kinda difficult to find a small eventing barn in this area. Mainly all of the small, private barns that aren’t $600+ a month to board are western or trail barns.
