Small gift for horse's former owner?

The woman I am purchasing a horse from has gone above and beyond to help make this purchase go smoothly. She is in Oregon, and I’m in Hawaii, so there are a number of logistical issues that need to be worked out. She has taken the time to trailer the horse to the vets for both the coggins, and later for the health cert. She could have just had the vet out, but wanted to save me the money from the farm call. She also offered to drive the horse 3 hours away for the pick up by the professional shipper, though that turned out not to be needed. On top of that she is boarding him, at no charge, at her place for a month until the shipper gets out there to pick him up. She is also mailing me his bridle and fancy show halter, since they can’t go with him on the boat.

I was thinking of putting together a little something to thank her. Maybe a small box of Hawaiian treats (local coffee, Honolulu cookie company shortbread, chocolate covered mac nuts, that sort of thing). Maybe a photo of her former horse all settled in the Hawaiian sun, or at the beach, in a cute, simple frame. I found one with plumeria blossoms carved on it that is nice without being over the top.

Is that too much? Am I being presumptuous? Would you think it was strange to get a gift box from the person you sold your horse to?

If the seller is an individual selling a personal horse, a thank you gift - especially a photo of him in his new home sounds like a great idea.

If the seller is a trainer/breeder/sales barn, be sure to write them a nice letter they can use as a recommendation or post a review on their website/FB page. Don’t go into details about the free board, trailer to vet, etc, just that it was a super positive experience and they were completely professional. You wouldn’t hesitate to work with them again…

I gotta ask, given your signature line: What color is the new guy?

i think it would be very thoughtful and maybe put to rest any doubts they may have had about selling their horse.

It is her personal horse. She has owned horses her whole life, but an injury has forced her to step away from horses. She actually turned down a couple of people who wanted to buy this little guy, because she didn’t feel confident about them.

He’s a Fjord, a bay dun.

I think the picture of the horse at the beach would be cute. Might even make her jealous of her horse’s new life!

Then definitely do it and maybe send her a photo Christmas card each year to let her know he is still doing well.

(I bet he’s a hunk! - you will have to post pictures when he arrives)

I think it is a lovely idea. That’s very nice of you.

got to have a lei around its neck

I think the treats would be great, along with a special photo or set of photos of the horse and maybe even hair jewelry.

not sure how much you want to spend, but there is a woman who I found on facebook, who makes these AWESOME stained glass portraits of your horse. You could get one of those made? The link is:

I have gotten many pieces from her, and they are the best things ever!!! I LOVE THEM so much!

Nice idea.

Very nice idea.

If you are a Facebook user, think about if you want to friend her on Facebook. Most of my Facebook postings are photos of places I go with my horses. Their former owners see the photos and enjoy them.

Very nice idea. Another thought would be a horsehair necklace or bracelet although they are pricier.

OP, glad to hear a Fjord is coming to Hawaii. The NFHR is showing two Fjords in Hawaii, although I think one is coming on 30 and may not be alive any longer. And since you are joining, please know you have purchased a BROWN DUN, not a bay dun. Fjords come in brown, red, white, yellow and grey dun. There is lots of information about the breed on www.nfhr.com. You end up being a breed ambassador because people will stop you and ask lots of questions about your horse.

Congratulations on the Fjord purchase. I am sure he will make you very happy!

I was also going to suggest the photo but maybe a nice one with you and a big smile on your face next to your new horse with “Hawaii” (beach, garden, whatever speaks “Hawaii” to you  ) in the background. Like the sounds of the frame with the plumeria.

I’d think maybe a gift card?? Not knowing if she has food allergies or things she can’t eat, the card (restaurant, Amazon??) gives her options.

Lovely idea!!!

Love the idea - I think a photo of the horse all settled in at his new home would be a lovely surprise and any additional treats you choose to send would also be a nice gesture.

I think it is a great idea and if I sold a horse under similar circumstances I would be really touched to receive such a nice and thoughtful gift, especially in a case like this if it happened to be a “life forces sale” rather than “this horse was purchased specifically to sell”.

I think a horsehair bracelet would be a great present, too. One of our posters SpacyTracy makes gorgeous ones - I have ordered a bunch from her!

You’re so thoughtful to want to put something together!

Lovely idea! Love the idea of a little box of Hawaiian treats with a picture frame included. You can then send a few pictures to her once he’s there to fill the picture frame.

In all honesty, the best gift the people who have bought my horses can give me is updates and pictures of the horse doing whatever they were bought to do. Nothing gives me more pleasure than pictures of a happy horse and a happy owner.

I did look into the Fjord terms for the coloration. So I was aware that, in Fjord speak, he is a brown dun, but my signature refers to horse color genetics, and genetically speaking he is black based with at least one copy of Agouti and most likely two copies of dun. Since the poster who asked about his color mentioned my signature I wanted to be genetically accurate. I know the Fjords can also carry cream, but I see no indication that he has it. Though with a brown dun it would be more difficult to tell just from phenotype.

It sounds like the treats and picture will likely be a hit. So PROJECT ALOHA is a go. I have looked around at some of the horse hair jewelry, and it is both pricey and time consuming to have it made. I did find some ideas for a pendant that I am pretty sure I could do on my own. I am fairly crafty, and I already have a workshop for such things. I would just have to pick up the endcaps, or maybe a tube bail, and play around with it. He has a pretty long and shaggy mane at the moment, and my first order of business when he gets here will be to roach it. I want to have the traditional Fjord mane, it will be cooler for him (temperature and looks wise). That should give me plenty of hair to play with for a smaller item like a pendant.

I gotta ask. How does a horse get to Hawaii? Boat, or plane?
