Small Gift Registry - Fire Loss

We are finally seeing the light on being able to move into our new home. We lost our home, almost all of our posessions and a pet, to a 3 alarm fire in October 2021. We’ve been living in our pole barn sans running water, since then, traveling upwards of 30 miles one way just to take a shower.

I’ve been advised by a few people to make a gift registry around our move in date… I’m not sure if this is a tacky move or not. Insurance did NOT cover everything, and I wasn’t able to replace everything lost during the claim period. (I had no where to go with a standing mixer in a pole barn!)

Would a small, affordable gift registry be okay for the things I cannot get second hand? Things like bedding, blankets, pots and pans etc.

Like a 'housewarming party"? I’d say, yes, sure-- if you can throw a bit of a party for your friends and family, why not? Maybe include the option to provide gift cards like Visa ones or cash too? Tacky? Maybe, but no one has to bring a gift/contribute.

Offer appetizers, drinks, and open the new house up and celebrate. You’ve been down a heck of a road (I am so sorry for your loss) and deserved to take a breath and have a fun time. I’d come to a get together like that!

sure you can and OP’s is a worthy cause unlike those wishing for gifts of money to fund their vacation of dreams

OP’s post reminds me to document each room of the house with photos to help recall the contents if the home is destroyed

There way too much that one can actually say just what was there

(Just the two years living in a pole barn without water should have been documented on some social media platform as that was surely a lifestyle of the unknown. I spent less time in Asia and there are several things I just will not do now as a result)

This. And if the registry is stuff like bedding, towels, dishes. You’re not asking for a Tiffany lampshade (at least I hope!).

I think it’s a great idea! I’d much rather give a gift that is actually useful to someone! I see no difference in that and a wedding registry. I’m sorry you lost your home.

We planned on a housewarming party of some sort. I like the idea of a housewarming gift or hand me down instead of a registry! Thank you! And I appreciate your sentiment. It has not been an easy road.

I’ve got some stuff posted on my YouTube and Facebook, it’s been a huge change! But a necessary one. I’m so thankful we had somewhere to go, even it’s is 16x24 room with two giant breed dogs. :joy:

@WildGooseChase How awful to lose so much.
The barn living must have been a trial as well :grimacing:

I’d absolutely contribute to a cause like this.
A friend just redid a bathroom & we want her to do a Bathwarming. Gifts of her choosing to match the decor.

Local QH breeders lost their barn & several horses to fire a couple years ago.
Community put on a fundraiser for them with donated stuff to be auctioned.

Your friends & family would most likely be thrilled to give housewarming gifts that are truly needed.
GO FOR IT!

I would contribute as well. Totally worthy cause, not “fund floofys vet bill” or something. I don’t find it tacky at all.

I love he idea of a gift registry/ gift card money card request . It’s saves someone like me who has no idea what to get people for a lot of worry .
