Small shop vac for one horse?

Oops! Just saw there is already a topic on vacuums. I’ll move this over to that thread!

Hello All! I’m checking out Black Friday sales and considering purchasing a small Shop-Vac to use on my horse. Sadly, vacuums specifically made for horses are out of the budget. It’s just going to be used occasionally for my one horse so I don’t need anything super powerful or fancy. She’s a model citizen  , has been vacuumed before, and loved it!

Anyone tried one of the smaller units, like this Shop-Vac portable 2.5 gal?

I’m looking at ones with at least 6’ hoses. Also wondering if the smaller units are quieter than full sized.

Is this an unrealistic idea??

I didn’t see the other thread so I’ll answer here. I had a 5 gal Shop-vac with extra hose (about 20 ft), I mounted the vacuum on the other side of the wash rack wall to keep it out of the way and to lessen the noise a bit. The noise actually didn’t bother the horses, the long hose dragging around took a couple a few times to get used to and only one seemed a bit bothered by the suction. I was amazed at how easily they all accepted it. But they’re used to being groomed and washed.

Firstly, I don’t know how large your horse is but I have always bought Shop Vacs with longer hoses. (I think my favourite has a 7 foot hose.) If you have to pick the unit up to vacuum the top part of the horse, it becomes a royal PITA very quickly! Plus, the dirt collected in the vac increases the canister’s weight as it fills.

I found that it wasn’t so much the sound of the motor that bothered a horse as they get used to it very quickly. The larger issue is the canister rolling around on the floor: that takes a little longer to get them to believe it’s not a monster looking to eat them!

TBH, I always tried to test specific models in the store if at all possible! (Yes, some stores had units on display and it’s not all that difficult. I know from experience how much suction you need to clean a winter coat efficiently and quickly.)

With respect to the smaller units being less noisy, yes, to some extent. However, the pitch of the motor tends to be a bit higher. It was never an issue with the horses, but I did have one longtime barn cat (whom I eventually retired to my house) who absolutely HATED the higher pitch of one portable Shop Vac I had. She would put up with it for a while but would then begin to get agitated, meowing constantly while circling the horse. If you weren’t done immediately, she escalated to nipping at my legs and if still ignored, she’d start to go after the horse! At that point, I’d finish quickly and as soon as the motor was turned off, cat would walk away. It happened more than once, so I know it was the sound of that particular vac that bothered her as she never did it with any other one I had!

We have one similar to that. It does an okay job but tbh it’s way more work than it’s worth. My horse was a little cleaner afterward but nothing exciting or remarkable. I haven’t used it on him since. It’s great for vacuuming our vehicles out though :joy:

I’m also planning to use it in the car! I’m curious, what made it more work than it was worth? Lack of adequate suction?
Thanks!

I’ll add that in the winter the vac was the best thing to get the black horse looking good. Brushes would leave dirt streaks and then I’d have to towel him, so the vacuum took care of that. Mine wasn’t a pita because I had the vac fixed to the wall and just dragged around the hose. When done I looped the hose up on the wall. Easy-peasy

Take a pass on the small dewalt one. Just tried it. Not nearly enough suction. It is going back.

We vacuumed our thin-skinned TBs with a regular (=big!) shop vac. That thing was noisy as he11, would tip over and whine, the cord would get into the horse’s legs…and they stood perfectly still for it. I think they really enjoyed being vacuumed. It was great at getting the crud out of their winter coats.

The only thing to watch for is static. I used to get the vacuum’s brush a little wet before using.

Yeah not enough power/section to get dust out of his coat. It does a great job in the cars, so maybe I don’t have a great attachment for the hose for a horse?
