For snow plowing around the barn, paddocks, driveway, etc … I am considering purchasing a Quad/ATV. I have read that many people like their maneuverability. But, I’m wondering if I would be better off buying a (used) small pickup truck or Jeep Wrangler ? Bob.
Depends on how long your drive is… We’ve been looking at the same question. I want a Bobcat! They are just too much fun. They are highly maneuverable for plowing, but lose out to trucks in long stretches…
Our tractor works, but is kind of a pain since we have bucket on it. Would have to get plow blade…
Might end up with plow attachment for the diesel…
Yes, I love Bobcats too … but they are sooooo expensive. For the price of a Bobcat I could probably get a Quad, a Wrangler, and a small pickup truck (LOL).
our son just bought a farm in Penn, he got a Polaris Ranger XP with dump bed and snow plow with the place …the previous owner had been using it to plow the drive … but those things cost in the $13k range
I use either a front mount snow blower on my lawn tractor or a 3 point back blade on my farm tractor. Both work. If you’re moving deeper snow I question how well those small blades on the quads work even though I have seen people use them.
I’m going to try to get the seller to leave his Ranger for me… I’m not very optimistic since they are expensive… I never liked them before, but I’m changing my mind… I have a tractor, ATV, mower, farm truck and a big diesel truck, so I don’t really NEED it, but I WANT it
that is true… but they are so fun to drive!
When I was a senior in high school my parents left me home alone for 10 days for their annual winter vacation to somewhere sunny, warm and not Maine (I was a good responsible kid, no shenanigans while they were gone, girl scouts honor). Before they left, my dad gave me a lesson on plowing with the four wheeler (ATV). While dad typically provided plow service for the whole dirt road, he asked a neighbor to fill in so I only had to worry about the short driveway and parking for my car.
The first storm: a piece of cake. I went out every few hours and kept everything clear. Fine.
The second storm: came in during the evening when I was sleep. Woke up to 18 inches and still snowing. The four wheeler struggled. Thankfully the neighbor was out maintaining the road and dipped in to provide some real muscle with his plow truck. He did a quick job and I cleaned up with the four wheeler and shovel. I probably could have gotten it done, but it would have taken hours.
Moral of the story: Get a vehicle suited to the job. In Maine (or NH guessing by your user name) that means at least a 1/4 ton truck with four wheel drive and plow. Given my current location in North Carolina, I suspect I could get by with a four wheeler with a plow set up. YMMV
