Smarkpak discontinuing Pharmacy

I noticed that too! I just put both of my horses on Adequan, and was going to use Smartpak to purchase it from because it was about $5 a vial less than my vet. Next time I checked, it was way more! So bummed! My vet told me that they are looking into having their own online pharmacy for their clients.
They’ve jacked up prices in the meantime. Single dose of Adequan used to be $48, now it’s $58. Multidose vial used to be $400, now it’s $475. All of a sudden it’s cheaper to buy it from my overpriced vet!
I giggle that everything they do that people do not like has to have some nefarious reason.
Maybe their cost to buy it went up? Maybe your vet will be increasing their prices soon too.

It’s expensive to maintain the level of security required to keep CC info on file. Especially since the recent big hacks, I think fewer merchants are going to want the exposure, expense and hassle.

I also wonder if this isn’t a result of SmartPak being sold. I think they are going downhill.
The “word on the street” before SmartPak was sold (got this from the owner of another very successful online tack shop) was that the original investors were getting nervous because they lost money for a few months. I think that was around the time when they upped shipping charges, elminated free embroidery, etc. They did grow rather dramatically from a modest beginning just doing SmartPaks, then adding in a few things like brushes, and then kept adding more stuff until they were on an order of magnitude like Dover. Rapid growth can be debilitating to a new company, so I’m not too surprised they are attemtping to streamline and concentrate on products that will keep the company profitable.

Ya, I’m not concerned about that part, I just don’t buy online much so I foolishly assumed that was a simple/easy thing! I know my CC info by heart so calling up isn’t an issue (for me!)

I had noticed that their prices were going up… my teeny local tack store is actually beating SP’s fly spray prices at this point!!! A couple of years ago DH wondered if SP wasn’t maybe starting to get too big to keep up with itself.

One person I know surmised that maybe the reason for closing the pharmacy end of it was because they had been sued. I have NO information that anything happened like that, we were just discussing what could have brought about the change. I am bummed because I have one older horse on a prescription, and now I have to find another source, and go back to baggies. Boooooo!!!

About an hour after I posted on the thread, wondering about this, I got an email from SmartPak about closing the pharmacy too. They must be doing it in waves?

Good thing there’s a Dover opening up the next town over this fall, if SmartPak’s prices are going to be just as high!

I think this is kind of funny, since their selection compared to Dover’s is ridiculously small.

Personally, I buy almost everything at riding warehouse unless it’s something I’m not sure of the quality on, then I buy from Dover so I can return.

Boy that not good to hear :frowning: Valley Vet certainly is a good option, but I know Drs Foster and Smith tries to stay competitive with pricing and services. Might be worth a look. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pet-meds/pr/c/9547

I just had a request from SP to review an item I had purchased. Part of the review, not something that would be published, asked how likely I would be to recommend SP to someone else, and why. I wrote a scathing paragraph about closing the pharmacy. When SP was sold last year, we were all told that nothing would change. Riiiiiiiight. I expressed my disappointment, and how I was NOT looking forward to going back to baggies for the one RX I have a horse on.

I will update if I get a response from SP.

That spot in the review process is about that product, not the company and other things. This paragraph might get better attention simply sent as a comment to Smart Pak.

Yes, this was in a box for additional comments about SmartPak, if I would recommend SP to someone, not part of the review. I will certainly send it in an email, too. Good idea!

Haven’t gotten a letter or email yet. Do I have to do anything to get my prescription transferred?

Thanks for help

I got the email yesterday

I’ve used Allivet for my horse an dog meds for years. Great to work with and good prices. I don’t use it but I do believe they have an autoship option.

Yes, you can either call SP and tell them who to transfer you RX to, or call your new pharmacy and have them call SP.

Always had great experiences with Allivet for Rx.

You just give them your vet contact info and they take care of everything. My vets all said they were the easiest to work with. FarmVet being the worst - they are always losing scripts or vets having to call several times.

Allivet usually has the cheapest price as well, for the items I’ve ordered anyway. They do have auto-ship - you get 5% off.
