Smart GI Pellets or Neigh-lox

Wanting to keep an ulcer-prone gelding on a daily supplement as a preventative after treatment with omeprazole. We have added alfalfa hay to his diet also. What are your experiences with the Smart GI Pellets or Neigh-lox? Neighlox seems more like “TUMS for horses”, am I wrong? I know the production of stomach acid is greater after eating grain so I was wanting to feed him something with a buffer in it to reduce the acidity in his stomach. If we went with the neigh-lox route he would get it with his grain which is twice a day. Do the Smart GI Pellets have any sort of buffer to help with the acidity?

Thanks.

What is the buffer that Neigh-lox uses? You could call Smart Pak and ask them–I’ve found them to be responsive to questions re: formulations and other stuff.

I’ve actually been having really good luck with U Gard (powder or pellet). It’s very cost effective. My horse only receives 1 dose (recommended twice a day) and it keeps his GI issues at bay.

I don’t recall off the top of my head what Smartpak’s GI supplements have in them, but I remember in the course of comparison, I didn’t care for the price vs what you got. Neigh-Lox is similar to U gard, but doesn’t have the same active ingredients, IIRC. Never tried it because what I’ve used has worked well. U gard has a lot of tummy soothers and also acid buffer qualities to it, and it has done well for my OTTB. YMMV

Neigh-lox uses aluminum, which I wasn’t so keen on.

U-gard uses calcium/magnesium as a buffer, plus other stuff

I’m a little afraid to say this out loud, but I’m currently having success with a very ulcer-prone horse with a combination of U-Gard & U-7 liquid twice/day. I had tried U-Gard alone and it just wasn’t enough. Adding the U-7 made a big difference. I’m a little afraid to mess with success so I haven’t tried cutting out the U-Gard. Also I like having the Ca/Mg buffer at breakfast time, when his hay has been gone for several hours.

I hadn’t tried SmartGut, so I can’t comment on them.

Neigh Lox is really good.
