Smart Pak Ultimate Turnout

Update. Sorry to say blanket number two also failed miserably. We had significant rain in the Northeast today I put it on the horse last night and the whole thing is wet underneath . The kicker being my farm owner has several of the same blanket she purchased a few years ago and her horses are bone dry.

So back it goes and I ordered a Rambo from my favorite NJ tack shop.

————————

I decided to try it because of the 10 year guarantee. First day out in the rain and it got soaked through all the way head to tail. This is a blanket with an attached neck. I am normally a diehard Rambo Fan. Anyone have a good luck with SmartPak turn out? Mine is going back.

I had one probably ten years ago, before the ten year guarantee. It was fine for the handful of years I used it, it went with that horse.

I feel like no turnouts are as good as they were ten or twenty years ago.

I had one, failed right away but the replacement was amazing. They do stand by their guarantee which is better than Rambos IMEX

Thanks . I am trying g to decide whether to replace with same or something else.

Since there IS a stellar guarantee, call them up, get a postage paid return label and they will ship a new blanket while waiting for the old one IMEX. They will do this over and over until you are happy, from what I understand of the guarantee. I did it once, it was VERY easy, and as a die hard Rambo user for many years I will say adjustable front blankets are just better - Rambos rubbed a lot of horses. And I am so done with the Rambo style “$hit strap” grossness - prefer reg legs straps. And the Rambo guarantee is NOT that good, and has some specific requirements and exclusions - I tried to use it once and was out of luck!

I am now a diehard Smartpack blanket fan!

I agree re your entire assessment and feeling about horseware blankets. I do not understand their popularity among so so so many people who should know better regarding blanket fit and maintenance

That said, if you buy from Dover, you can do the same thing as with the smartpak blanket, but with any blanket bought at Dover, whose return policy is beyond generous

Okay good to know. Dover catalog had the 4-1 blanket I was considering.

I believe the Dover guarantee is not quite as good anymore, sadly :frowning: It’s a “doesn’t fit? return within a year” with a lot of caveats. The Dover brand NorthWind blankets have a “lifetime guarantee” against manufacturer’s defects. meaning it’s better than the Rambo 3 year guarantee, and covers waterproofing gone awry, but the Smartpack guarantee says “if anything happens to this blanket within 10 years of your purchase, we’ll exchange it for a new one in the same size – no matter what!”

You cannot beat that!

FYI: I’ve had a lot of stock issues with Dover in the last few months. 6 different things that I ordered as in stock have been delayed/canceled/backordered after the fact.

I’ve tried most of them, I found the Rambo Optimo to be the best. It’s expensive but well worth the price. Not really true to size though, you will need to size down at least one. My older man is an Oldenburg that wears an 86. He’s bus sized normally, 84 in an Optimo. My youngster wore between a 78 & 81 depending on the maker, he had a 75 in the Optimo.

We have had SP replace 4 of their Ultimates over the years with no problems, just did one that was 5 years old, lining seam tore and they replaced right away. A Combo Sheet similar yours that leaked, also one of the Ultimate fly sheets one horse rip the surcingles off of and they sent the replacements right away. They also honored a Weatherbeeta 3 yr warranty with absolutely no problem. Have replaced just about all of the horse’s sheets and blankets with SP Ultimates, very happy with the overall performance and replacement policy.

Both of my horses are currently outfitted in SmartPak Ultimate blankets and sheets. My gelding has an Ultimate sheet that is still going strong after 3 or 4 seasons of heavy use and has plenty of life still left in it. On the other hand, my mare has had her Ultimate sheet and Ultimate high neck blanket for just one season, and I have already had to replace the blanket twice. She is very gentle on her blankets, but the last two I have had just fell apart within just a couple of months of use. The first one ripped right down the center and the front strap on the second blanket was ripped clean off after my mare got up from rolling. SmartPak was really great about sending the replacements quickly for both, and the most recent one they sent me seem to be holding up well.

I like the blankets overall, but it just seems like the quality is all over the board. Thank goodness they have such a great return policy!

PSA the Ultimate blankets and sheets are 20% off today if anyone is looking to buy.
