others in use? what do they do and for which platform?

Gaia GPS

I have it for my iphone 4G. I think it cost 7.99$
I can download the maps for the area that I’m riding/hunting and turn on the track button and it will map where I have been and give me the lay of the land and local roads. It also gives me altitude, average speed traveled, fastest speed, time traveled, time moving, time still, distance traveled, and ascent.

I can upload the tracks to everytrail.com and then forward an email. This is an example of what info you get from the web site.

You don’t have to have cell service for it to record a track, but you do have to have cell service to download the local map. Once the map is loaded on your phone, you can go into the boonies and you will see where you are, where you have been, and hopefully a way to get home.

If you ride a track today and want to ride the same one 2 weeks later, you can set the track to “guide me” and it will help you around the trail/track.

According to reviewers, it is as accurate as a garmin gps unit, and for a fraction of the cost of a handheld unit.

I don’t have experience with other gps apps for smart phones, but I am happy with this app.

endomondo.com

I use endomondo.com on my blackberry. It’s a free app.

here’s a link to one of our hunts.
