Or they can do what many other places do and say discounts only apply to those paying full price and do not apply to items already discounted for other reasons.
Or they could just change the language to say “20% off then 5% off” or something along those lines. Then they’d be making the same money they are now and not lying. They wouldn’t even have to change their coding.
Also, I’m returning a monogrammed item (jacket) today because I hate it. It is a truly repulsive piece of clothing. They have said they’d take it back.

I’ll bet it does not. SP has probably costed all this out such that they know how much more they make with each of those kinds of discounts than without. Honestly, a large solvent business does have its finger on the pulse of it’s profit margin and costing. There’s no other way to manage it and make money. FWIW, I’m sure they did plenty of penciling before adding the free shipping (which their main competitor does not offer), and also when they gave/took away the free monogramming. All that, I’ll bet, was done with quantitative eyes wide open.
I hope you’re right mvp because I appreciate my little 5% discount! Doesn’t sound like much but it sure adds up over the long run. Honestly, I’ve never paid any attention to the other discounts or how the match adds up because they usually don’t apply to anything I need.
Do they not have some sort of deal with USEF for the 5% off? It’s a USEF member benefit. I always assumed there was a Smartpak-USEF deal wherein USEF paid Smartpak something to offer that benefit. I could be wrong, but that’s my assumption.
Smartpak benefits by the discount because it steers business to Smartpak that might otherwise go elsewhere and creates loyalty. But I also assumed Smartpak got a kicker of some sort from USEF too.
A minor update:
Last week, I asked SP to have someone with decision-making power to look into this, find a solution and e-mail me about that by Friday, 2/20. They did, more or less, with the person being out of the office until Monday.
I left her a VM this morning, asking for a call back. My purpose is to address the fact that this problem extends to previous sales. (Her e-mail acknowledged that there was a problem with this most recent, Presidents’ Day sale.) Also, I want to know if any of you USEF/AQHA people who purchased things during this sale have received those promised credits.
I’ll let you know what she says.
I can tell you that I just ordered $356 worth of horse boots and my AQHA membership discount did NOT show up at the check out. I thought those membership discounts applied to everything or am I wrong on that?

As I understand it, those 5%-ers do show up… in all times and all places. I’ll bet their software is under construction right now and that’s why yours didn’t materialize.
I know it’s a PITA, but you should speak to a Real Human Being about that before you order. Your 5% is an appreciable amount in this case.
And another thing! Part of the reason I went All Rosa Parks on this issue is because so many other people with whom I have discussed this problem in the past said “Yeah, I know I got ripped off…. but not for a lot so… meh.”

They do.
My USEF discount was on for months and then it randomly went off. I called and they reactivated it.
I also asked for a similar email, now 8 days ago.
Haven’t heard a word.

Apparently it doesn’t. I just called and they said unfortunately it doesn’t apply to some manufacturers because they don’t allow it? It figures its one of those with the most expensive stuff.

Sigh. Does the website say anywhere that the 5% doesn’t apply to some products? When I read other stores’ discount fliers, I note the fine print that specifies those exclusions. I think they have to put info like that in writing….somewhere.
I’m not aware of it saying it anywhere but I’ve never looked to see.

They used to have a list online…but I can’t find it now!

This link says 5% off Every Purchase for USEF members with a little asterisk denoting at the very bottom of the page all 65 brands that are excluded (pretty much every brand you’d actually want to save money on)…
