Smzs

My horse is on previcox. I give her a quarter of a pill a day.Does anyone know if it’s safe to use SMZ’S with Previcox?

Ask the vet who is prescribing the SMZs. You are getting the RX from a vet I presume.

Not to highjack, but WHAT ARE SMZs???!!!

SMZs are basic antibiotics for horses. Sulfamethoxazole

You use Equiox or Previcox? I thought the direction was 1 pill per day since both pills are the same dosage. Why do you give 1/4 pill?

A horse dose of the large Previcox pill is 1/4 of a tablet.

Dogs can take a full tablet.Horses cannot as it is not good for their liver.Quarter of s tablet works on a horse.

They’re not the same dosage; Previcox is 227 mg and Equioxx is 57 mg.

This is why it’s REALLY IMPORTANT to talk actual dosage, not piece-parts of a pill.

Horses get a 57mg dose of firocoxib. They might occasionally be prescribed a larger dose short term, just like they might get more than 1gm bute short term. Don’t try that at home by yourself

  • That's 1 of the 57mg Previcox pills
  • That's (roughly) 1/4 of the 227mg Previcox pills
  • That's 1 of the Equioxx pills because that's the only size it comes in

See above - Previcox also comes in a 57mg pill size.

1/4 of a 227mg Previcox is the cheapest way to use this drug. It’s also illegal for a vet to prescribe it for a horse. Yes, it’s done. No, I don’t think anyone has gotten in trouble for it. Yes, it’s still illegal, it’s just not worth going after a vet for it.

Thank you! I knew it was something. Yes, most vets now give the Equioxx.

My horse lives on both Previcox and SMZs (long story…3 infected tooth roots and they cannot pull 3 molars in a row) and my vet said the combination was perfectly safe. It’s been 5 years and as of this spring, all bloodwork was still normal.
