Snap on browband slips down

I have a nice PS of Sweden bridle that came with a plain rolled leather snap on/off browband. I purchased two pretty snap-on browbands with crystals for use at shows. The original browband will stay in place once I get the bridle on the horse (it slips down hanging in the bridle rack). Neither of the crystal show browbands will stay in place on the horse. They slide down unevenly (I am sure it’s because the crystals make them heavier). I think I am going to have to modifiy the bridle slightly to add some support for the heavier browbands.

(I hope I can explain this well enough) - My idea was to make two small holes vertically in the crown piece (both sides), lace some heavy duty black waxed thread though these two holes to make a vertical loop to hold the browband up in the correct position.

Before I do this I thought I would check to see if anybody has a better idea. Thank you!

P.S. afterthought - I will go to the rule book and look but suddenly wondered if this thread loop would be illegal? Anybody know the answer to that?

What about a few braiding bands, hair elastics or plastic zip tie (all black, zip tie trimmed short) to create a wider “stop” on the crownpiece? Similar to hand stops on reins?

  • keeps your crownpiece intact. Save resale value and intergrity of the leather.
  • easily removed if a TD deems it illegal. Just find the TD before your classes to ask.

We once used a few human ponytail elastics to tame the long billets on a pony girth, hence the idea.

I bought a $5 roll of self-adhesive rubber and stuck a strip on the inside of the loop on each of my browbands. They aren’t perfect, but they no longer slide down when on the horse.

Thank you for those ideas! I was soooo hesitant to punch holes in my bridle - yikes!

I think this might work! Can you tell me more about the rubber tape you bought? What is it usually used for? I have a black roll of Flex Seal that we use to seal water tanks so it it would probably stay on through the sweat and rain but it’s not partiularly thick. Is there something I could buy with a little more thickness?

Pop into a bicycle shop. Often items meant to clamp onto the frame like water bottles and odometer, etc. have grippy rubber strips … hey hang on, that stuff you can get in Wal-Mart for making shelves non slip would work. Cut a tiny piece, apply rubber cement to one side of the grippy bit and to the inside of the browband loop, stick the together and away you go.

I use braiding plastics for bridle keepers that are too loose, but I doubt they’d be sufficient for a browband with the weight of crystals. I mean they’d work for a bit but would probably fail at an inappropriate time.

I use this around the browband to squish it together. They are handy to have around anyway!

I recently added a couple of stitches to my snap-on brow bands to just “tighten” the hole when it’s snapped on. I think a lot of them are built for double bridles so have extra room in an snaffle, and all of mine are loose. I added the stitches to the side where it closes and this worked great for me.

Here’s what I use: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJ6S2JQF?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

Thank You! That does look like a good solution.

If that doesn’t work you can use bat handle wrap, usually Walmart carries it along with every sporting goods store
