So, now we’ve concluded one portion of the Equestrian stuff. I thought the NBC LIVE EXTRA coverage was absolutely the very best EVER !!! The quality of coverage on my iPhone, iPad & online with my MAC was incomparable to anything I’ve ever seen. The camera angles and videography was utterly amazing. My only complaint was during the Dressage phase of the Eventing you couldn’t here the Commentary but they obviously got that glitch fixed cause it was terrific for the CC & Stadium. Even watching it over & over in REPLAY mode came thru absolutely BRILLIANTLY ! I’m so STOKED to watch the Dressage starting tomorrow. Only one real complaint…I CAN’T FIND THE APP THAT’LL MUCK MY STALLS & WORK AND FEED MY HORSES SO I CAN STAY IN AND WATCH IT ALL LIVE !!!
For those of us who DON’T have cable TV - is there a place to watch the equestrian events (or ANY of the events)? I’ve tried NBCOlympics.com and it requires a cable tv log on, grrrr.

Agreed. It was absolutely terrific.
NBC online used the BBC feed, and I say hip,hip, hooray for that !

Are you sure?
I know people are logging on from work directly from the nbcolympics.com site and there is no cable service here.
I think you have to have a current account to get even a temporary password. I watched the cross country last night, and I had to either log on with my cable site user name and pass word, or have my cable bill handy.
But I agree, from what I watched, the coverage was super!
I agree. The coverage is outstanding and I can’t wait for dressage to start tomorrow.
As for the nbcolympics website, you don’t have to have an active cable connection- but you do have to put in your name and password from your cable provider to access the feed.
I thought it was very, very good. The quality was excellent on my iPad.

Couldn’t tell you. Being as I am not a cable subscriber – NBC blocks me from watching any of the live coverage. I am allowed to see a few choice clips (Japan’s winning dressage ride – Zara Phillips cross country) but they will not allow me to watch any live coverage, or full replays.
I think it is terrible that Americans cannot watch their county compete – and cheer for our athletes unless you are giving a cable company $$ every month.
Here is what NBC sent me when i emailed them about the fact that I was hoping to watch online b/c I didn’t get TV at home:
"NBC Olympics, Jul 30 08:09 pm (EDT):
Live streaming video coverage, plus full-event replays, will be exclusive to cable/satellite subscribers having a subscription level including both CNBC and MSNBC. There will not be a pay/subscription offering. But short-form video content, including comprehensive highlights, interviews, athlete profiles and more, will be available to all users. Additionally, content streamed LIVE online will also be available for all users 48 hours after the event is live streamed.
One new feature that we have available on the NBCOlympics.com and in the Live Extra app is our Temporary Pass. Any user can access content without a cable provider login for a 4 hour period. Start by simply selecting a provider and then below the login screen you will see an option to enter in your email address to view the Temporary Pass. Once you’ve done that your 4hr Temporary Pass will be granted."
They made it sound like you could get a temporary pass without a cable provider login, but I could not get it to work. Just thought I’d post this in case anyone else better with computers wants to try.
How to contact NBC to say “Thank You and keep the horses coming?”
Anyone know how to contact NBC to let them know our appreciation and how to encourage them to continue, given just how many horse lovers live in this country, too, just like England??
I thought the coverage was very good. I do wish that they would talk about the horses more. They sounded a bit like an after-thought. Commentators always focussed on the downed riders, but referred only briefly to the horses’ wellbeing. It’s their chance to reinforce how much is done for the horses’ welfare… the daily care, the depth of the veterinary pool, etc., etc. They need to manage what I call the ‘wince factor,’ and the commentators blew over this, IMO.
MST was a good commentator, but not very savvy about how her words might fall on non-horsey ears. I asked my non-horsey boyfriend if he u/stood some of her more ‘slang’ terms, like ‘take a tug,’ etc., and no, he didn’t understand what she meant.
She also will say a horse is ‘lovely,’ but didn’t explain why she thought the horse was lovely. I had my own opinions, as I think every horse is lovely, but, again, to the non-horseperson, they would be in the dark as to the intent of her comment, when it could have been an opportunity to hear about equine personality and athleticism and intelligence. I mean, these event horses are phenoms…
From what I watched of the XC replay last night, the camera angles and coverage really were wonderful. Looking forward to watching more tonight 
That said, this “cable login” stuff I think is a bit of a nightmare and they should have just offered an online subscription service.
And the app, at least for android, is horrible. It kept telling me that live events weren’t available during times I KNOW they were on, and the video kept freezing and stuttering and shutting down.
I agree. Coverage was super. The quality of filming was AMAZING. The sound was a little low for XC, but the commentor was good (he was in love with that gray horse.) Pretty much no commentary for dressage and SJ, which was interesting.
Mystic and Appsolute. I think you CAN get it. I have Comcast, but am cheap and minimal cable. You have to call and get a US center to help you, and it takes awhile, but they SHOULD be able to make it so you can pay for cable so you can see it on your computer without getting anything done on your tv.
At first they insisted they could ONLY do it by sending me all new equipement. Just push them and tell them you JUST want cable access for replaying on your computer. They CAN do it–it’s just whether you get to someone who will and has any access.
I got mine turned on Monday and have been able to see all of the coverage. On NBC online if you look up Equestrian, it has some of the replay coverage, but not dressage eventing. I had to search that, and was able to get all of it.
I’m assuming they are going to leave it all up for awhile because I’m off to Hawaii Tuesday and need to watch the replays of the rest of the dressage and jumping!
Some of us that already pay ridiculous prices for satellite, etc, would rather not have to pay an additional fee to watch what I basically already pay for. NBC is not the first to do this.
This is the first Olympics where EVERY SPORT AND EVENT can be seen live in its entirety. Just not everyone may be able to access it.
The first time I tried to log in with my directv account it didn’t work right, my computer was screen was blocking the box I had to put my password in so I used the temporary 4 hour pass—it worked just fine.
I’m glad to see that others feel as I do. I wondered on the way to work this morning if I’m thinking equestrian coverage is so superior to what it’s ever been just because some wonderful COTH soul posted times for DC (and since I live in NY, depended on being in the same timezone) and I figured out how to DVR just that. I’m really enjoying seeing more than one or two jumps from one or two riders.

The coverage so far has been wonderful, and I agree with those who have said the camera work has been great and the online commentator on the xc was excellent. The only criticism I had there was that once in awhile that big xc graphic that they flashed when changing from one view to another came on just as someone was jumping, so you missed it, but that wasn’t often.
When people refer to the need to have a cable tv subscription, I just wanted to add that satellite works too. I have Dish Network for TV at home, and can use my login for the account to access the NBC Live coverage from anywhere that I have internet access.
Does the 4 hour temp pass only work once? I did it at first when I didn’t have my Dish login info at hand, and it worked great for me, and wonder if those without sat/cable could use it more than once.

Tried that… Comcast wanted to charge EXTRA to allow for online viewing… wasn’t going to ask my neighbor to change their cable subscription!!
Friends - they are like me, find TV a waste of time and money and do not subscribe to cable.
Family - they are local - so Comcast subscribers as well, and have only basic subscriptions (not a TV / Movie family) - which do not come with the “online viewing” privilege.
It comes down to the fact that NBC - and Comcast want you to watch on TV - and watch the ADVERTISEMENTS vs. online.

I understand your frustration, but NBC is a for PROFIT corporation, not the government. I just saw a headline that said NBC is aiming to break even on the Olympic coverage.
