I’ve been reading other forums. What is everyone’s opinion? Are collapsible jumps effective in keeps horses/riders safe in a rotational fall type situation…or do you think having solid cross country jumps is sometimes better?
How many show jumper rider deaths can you think of recently? (I, personally, don’t know any although I am sure there are some.)
How many cross country rider deaths can you think of recently? (Off the top of my head I remember reading about two from COTH, the very recent one and one maybe a year back?)
I think that is a your answer.
Even just compare injuries. McLain Ward shattered his knee cap but was riding a few months later where Karen O’Connor hurt her spine and is looking in to new disciplines.
Is show jumping dangerous? Undoubtedly. But the jumps fall down and the horses are fresher. Cross county courses are made of solid fences and long tracks.
i have, personally, not seen a rotational fall happen in a show-jumping phase. i’ve seen some bad crashes and in one unlucky division, witnessed a crash that resulted in the rider getting airlifted (helicopter) at a well known event a few years back… but never a rotational fall of any degree – probably simply to the nature that SJ jumps are typically “collapsible”. that is not to say other people have.
however, i’ve seen three (3!!) rotational falls XC in person, in the space of 3 months, while i went down south to train my eventing horse. not to mention the rotational falls in the UL broadcasted by media…
i am sure SJ merits some “lethality”, but i think XC by far is more profoundly dangerous - as it is over a longer period of time over solid jumps, and the horses are “tried” and “run ragged”… in SJ, the horses are significantly more “fresh”. if the horse is not fit enough for the XC task, it is doubly more-so dangerous… but if a horse isn’t fit enough for an SJ round, they usually bomb around anyway (maybe some rails or two in their wake).
The man is trying to bury the truth!!! Posts keep disappearing! It’s a conspiracy to keep us from showing that nobody knows if show jumping is safer than XC!
I tell you, beowulf, Rel6 are the only posts that ever survive. They are in cahoots!
whoa

Well that huge Hunter Derby thread just up and disappeared. It was a fun thread. Why did it go away?
I kept getting database errors on the COTH forums yesterday, maybe it was just technical difficulties.

Dear, lord! Are you blind?! This is a cover up! We were too close to the truth and the Parlentti seller, along with Beowulf and rel6 are directing it!!! They don’t want the public to know!!! They want us in the dark!!!
By, god, I will make sure my data will not be suppressed!!! Get me the media!!! I’m blowing the lid off this!
COVER UP! COVER UP!
Ok - I’m covered up!

we’ll have to spearhead another one!! conspiracy!!
And I posted an intelligent response to that thread! There was a lot of discussion and speed curves and what not but here’s my thought. You can’t really compare the 2 until the riders are equipped the same. Most of the SJ I see here wear a helmet but not other protective gear but CC riders are geared up in a protective vest and some, an air vest over that. Until the SJ riders add a vest or the CC riders take off theirs, it will be hard to compare the 2.

I can’t really think of an instance when cross country solid jumps would be safer.

Man, this was a good discussion both times before it disappeared… Anyhoo…I don’t get the thought here. Pretty sure there is no argument there are more serious injuries and deaths in CC then SJ even tho SJ has greater numbers participating so why would adding a vest to SJ riders make them more equal for comparative purposes??? They never will be exactly the same anyway even tho the horse goes over jumps in both.
