So……is this mare pregnant? UPDATE - vet says NO BABY

Note: I have a vet appt scheduled in a couple weeks and we’ll find out for sure then!

In the meantime, some fun speculation. Three year old mare I acquired in late February. She was underweight then and quickly gained through the spring. And continues to gain, and gain, and gain
Recently, her teats have gotten a bit fuller and I can express milky liquid. As a 3yo maiden she had teeny tiny teats you could barely see. They’re still small now, but definitely bigger. Her vulva appears a bit puffy, although not lax.

The farm I bought her from does have a stallion (a tiny pony) although I was told she wasn’t exposed. Her home before that was her TB breeder, also with stallions on premises. She left the breeder’s farm in October.

I put her on regumate when she arrived at my farm because she developed an unhealthy attachment to another mare. So no cycles.

Any breeding would have been accidental I’m sure.
So who wants to take bets?

The impending foal aside, I am impressed at how much she has changed. She looks like a totally different horse. Wow!

Uh oh! I’m betting baby… just have to wonder who the daddy is…

The stallion I know of at her previous home is a pinto pony, very small. So who knows what may pop out??

The perfect little gaming pony for a kid!

Is this the mare you hope will remain 14.2 or less?

She does look like she might be in foal. If she is, is there any chance a TB could be the sire?

  1. WOW…you have put some “bloom” on her. She looks great.

  2. Cannot comment on her possible pregnancy, BUT I have seen two different horses come through auction that were bred. We caught it as it seemed that that hay belly was hanging a little left or right, or would shift. Maybe a few days of photos from behind will show movement or unevenness?

And for goodness sake, keep us updated!

I have a mare with a “food baby” because she eats 500 pounds of grass a day. But your mare has that large blob sitting farther back in her belly. And lower too. I think I would get her palpated or a blood test done so you know if you have to boost her vaccination schedule and be on the lookout for a BOGO.

Yes, this is my itty bitty TB! (Holding on at 14.1 1/2 fingers crossed!)

There is a possibility she could have been bred before being sold to the farm where I got her, and that would have been late October at the latest. Would have had to be a big mistake, as they breed for the racetrack and who would deliberately breed a 2yo TB in the fall? But it is possible.

Pretty unlikely that she was purposefully bred then, and someone should have noticed if a stallion got to her. There had to be a loose horse somewhere in the equation.

Have you been to the farm with the pinto pony? It should be pretty difficult for a filly or mare to be bred unintentionally. With good fences and good management someone should have noticed that the pony was in the wrong place, if indeed he bred the filly.

It’ll be interesting to know if she’s pregnant. Please keep us updated.

Looks pregnant to me :grinning:

I am hoping it is the pinto pony that got her as that would make a nice cross due to her smaller stature.

She looks fabulous!!

I am betting she was bred last year and you got a 2 for 1 deal! However, dont continue to express anything from her teats. Also, you dont want to continue stimulation of her teats in the event she isnt pregnant. But I am guessing she is!

A good test is gently press in her flank area and feel if something pushes back.

Alrighty then. Did a P-test on little mare today and it sure looks positive to me. Emailed my vet just now to ask her to please come out this week and confirm so I know where we are. Window of opportunity for stallion cover is November thru February at the latest. I suppose these things can give a false positive? I’m a little in shock. :open_mouth:

I did a double test on a mare I was suspect of. Other than it being colder out than was recommended I followed the instructions perfectly. Which their parameters are pretty hard to meet IMO… And I still ended up with a false positive and the early indicator like you. I had the vet check her at spring shots and was not pregnant so I have zero faith in such tests now.

Oh goodness. Now I know I’ll just be losing sleep over it until confirmed one way or the other.
