So many questions about pentosan, pentosan eq, pent aussie, & others

I am quite confused about pentosan, all the available forms, and different places you can order them from.

Can someone simplify it for me?

Is Wedgewood & Heart Valley the only places you can buy them with a prescription?

What is the difference between all the different forms?

Is any form not compounded?

Why is it discontinued?

Will try to answer questions in order-

  1. Is Wedgewood & Heart Valley the only places you can buy them with a prescription? I am not sure of all the places to order from, but Wedgewood does make a reputable compounded product and is what I use.

  2. What is the difference between all the different forms? There is regular plain old Pentosan, and then there is Pent Aussie which also has glucosamine. Pent Aussie is no longer available in the US. Pentosan Eq was manufactured by Ceva, the pharmaceutical company in Australia that makes Pentosan and is the formula all compounded versions are modeled after. Pentosan Eq is not available in the US anymore either.

  3. Yes, Pentosan Eq is not compounded but again, not available in US at this time. It was for a while though. There are a few race horse medication sites that sell their own version of Pentosan and others say it works great. I haven’t tried these products as I personally find how they market and sell products to be sketchy and don’t trust them. There is Race Horse Meds and Horse Prerace online…probably a few others too.

  4. The link you posted is for Pent Aussie and the website does confirm the product is no longer available.

Most people I know get it from Wedgewood - this is who my large vet clinic is going through so that works for me and price is reasonable.

You can buy Pentosan at racehorsemeds.com. I haven’t ordered Pentosan through them but another COTH member said you don’t need a Rx. I ordered through Wedgewood once and once through my vet. Was a little cheaper going through my vet and the needles/syringes were included for free. Have you checked with your vet?

Thank you!! Why is Pent Aussie and Pentosan EQ no longer available in the US?

I don’t recall exactly- but I know Petosan Eq is by Ceva and manufactured in Australia; I think it had something to do with the ability to import it.

I think Pentosan from Wedgewood works well, is safe, and is cost effective. Do your homework if you order from a race horse website though- they are secretive about how and where their product is made and I found some good studies that some of their products don’t have the content that they label…I will post later if I can find.
Wedgewood does require an Rx though.

Thanks! I’ve used Wedgewood in the past and will probably stay with them. RaceHorse doesn’t seem to be worth the risk.

The article was on the Pauclick report website, and it had to do with efficacy of many of the drugs from the racing horse websites. I can’t remember if there was anything specific on pentosan, but one of the studies showed that one of their products wast just mostly water. I think Wedgewood is a better/safer bet, and it’s what my vet recommends so that makes me feel better.
