So.....there's horse meat in Wendy's chili?

Having a hard time copying the link on my phone, but apparently Wendy’s has recently admitted to using equine and rattus fillers to make up for the lack of beef in their chili.

I know that there is a whole “use every part, don’t let it go to waste” argument, but this just grosses me out. :frowning: I’ve never had their chili - rarely eat there ever - but shouldn’t they have to have a disclaimer or something?

Snopes says the source of the rumor was a satirical article and that the rumor is false http://www.snopes.com/media/notnews/wendyschili.asp

Not that I am any more tempted to eat the stuff knowing that.

I love Wendy’s Chili.

I don’t understand how these sites think what they write is satire. Lies do not satire make.

I was under the impression that the chili was created by using the uncooked burger meat that was at end of life and would otherwise be disposed of if it reached the point where it “went bad”.

Actually, Wendy’s chili is made using the over cooked hamburger meat off the grill. It’s stored in the walk in freezer until the next morning when a new batch of chili is made.

How do I know this? I worked at a Wendy’s for about 2 1/2 years in high school and opened on Sunday, so made plenty of batches of chili.

We never did it the way LexInVA describes, but I could see it happening if there was hamburger meat that was going to go bad soon (typically the managers at the location I worked at were good about not over ordering supplies).

I think it is brilliant how they use the meat left on the grill for the chili. And the chili is very healthy for fast food that is

My husband and I had to be hospitalized after eating at Wendy’s almost 10 years ago. Needless to say we will never eat there again; just seeing one of their restaurants makes me feel physically ill!

This! When burgers are on the grill too long they go into the chilli bin. Chilli is made every morning and sometimes mid day if they’re running low on busy days.

LetItBe

I love Wendy’s chili. Don’t care if there is horsemeat in it!

If it’s sparkly, it’s probably canned unicorn meat. Tastes very similar to beef but with a dash of rainbow seasoning.

Some of us have higher standards.

I find those buzz articles entertaining. I guess you could call all satire a pile of lies. But it’s fully disclosed that it’s not real news… and it’s funny if you approach the articles with a sense of humor. And really funny when the right people don’t understand satire… http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/27/world/asia/north-korea-china-onion/

Reminds one of the rumors about McDonald’s in the 1970’s. They supposedly used worms as filler for their “burgers”.

I have heard from multiple sources that Hardee’s does use horse meat in their burgers. Haven’t eaten one of their burgers in decades.

Meh!

I’ve got money and buy good food… but sometimes I just crave that square piece of meat… whatever it’s made from!

I know many of these companies use horse meat in other countries where people do eat horse meat.

I’ll be the odd one here and say that horse meat doesn’t bother me. Doesn’t mean I want to eat it or would eat my own horse but if someone wants to eat horses that’s fine or decide to raise horses for meat consumption then so be it. Most people are only freaked out by it bc it might have been someone’s pet. I know that my opinion is not held by most horse people I know.

Now I wouldn’t want to find out I had been eating it without knowing. But I can think of a lot of hidden ingredients I don’t want to be putting in my body and horse meat is pretty low on that list of items.
