So what do we think is going to happen with horse sales now that we're coming out of lockdown?

Thoughts?

Honestly, the market here never really slowed up to a certain level. Auction prices are super high, Facebook seems busier, and the only horses people slowed selling were the ones they were needing to campaign at shows. I think it will continue to pick up IMO.

People have time on their hands, and they are buying.

All these stories about lesson horses going to slaughter, barns shutting down, etc… I have been trying for months to find a horse like that. Can’t find one!

Thanks guys. Belmont - where are you located? We’re trying to decide if it’s worth the risk to take on a couple of consignment horses.

Horses seem to be selling just fine in my neck of the woods. If anything, friends have gotten MORE inquiries since COVID-19. Perhaps because people have more time on their hands? I’ve been surprised to see horses selling as quickly as they have been. I’m in Florida, if that helps.

Why buy when you can adopt 52 free thoroughbreds bound for slaughter?

I jest. Honestly, I haven’t noticed any substantial slowing of sales. That said, I definitely sit in the cheap seats of the hunter world, so I can’t speak about the six figure types.

Hey … me, too! Wish it was as easy to find a horse as it was to find Blackie and Dolly! Where is the Richard in the horse world?

I started a thread in Off Course asking folks where they are finding their new horses. I can’t find anything but trolls and scams on the sales sites and the local/regional to me FB pages are fairly sketchy. I would love a retired lesson horse.

Maybe I should get a dog instead?! Lol

I’ve been looking, and several horses I’ve been interested in have sold before I had a chance to arrange to see them. Out of state travel was difficult during the shit down, and I still won’t get on a plane. Driving 1,000 miles to look at one horse isn’t feasible.

A friend took her children to visit some puppies at the Animal Shelter the other day as something they could do while also social distancing. That made me think about the goat farm up the street and maybe it is time to arrange to buy some new goats. Ours died of old age last year. I bet it would be easier to just get a couple of goats!

PS I assume Dolly is still living the life of a Princess?

Spoiled rotten and getting a puppy sibling soon! My mother wants another poodle to do more agility with. They’re starting to explore breeders.

how is Blackie? How are his eyes!?

Blackie is doing well. His blue coloring is starting to show. I noticed it first on his muzzle – no longer pitch black. He will be 5 years old on October 30th. His eyes are doing really well. We have determined that his eye problem is more due to seasonal allergies than a chronic condition. I think I told you that I finally found a local veterinarian with ophthalmic specialty training. That was a huge help as I didn’t have to set aside several hours for a round-trip visit to a larger city. I keep a close watch on his eyes for “eye goop” and start daily eye drops by mid-February to hopefully get ahead of all the spring blooming time. Usually by the end of June, I don’t have to do the daily drops anymore. Blackie goes for grooming every 4 weeks and his groomer helps me stay ahead of things. Also keeping the hair around his eyes clipped very close helps a lot.

Still watching various ads and FB pages for a new horse. It was so easy to find Rocky …
