so when an abscess blows out the coronary band...

what does it look like?
I’ve never seen one, despite a fairly hefty acquaintance with bottom-bursting abscesses…

My horse came in from the field last week with what I thought was a scrape on his coronary band – it was oozing a little blood, so I hosed it off and it looked like sort of a little abrasion…so I treated it as such.

The next day a friend came to ride him. He bonked himself on a log in the woods (just lazy feet, he does this all the time. Horse can jump 4’ without batting an eye but practically falls over logs on the ground…). She thought nothing of it but it must have stung as he overjumped the next log…and the spot was not only bloody when she came in, but now looked like a slice.

I honestly was puzzled as it really didn’t look like a slice when I first saw it; I saw no “cut,” just some angry almost bubbly skin…

Anyway, we have been treating it like a cut but it is a completely straight line, perhaps an inch+ long, and a bit deep.

Today the barn farrier was kindly tapping on the front shoe he pulled in my lesson, happened to see this on his back foot, and said, “oh, he blew out an abscess back there.” He said this was exactly what that looks like.

Yes? No?

Mostly just curious as whatever it is seems to be healing ok and he is sound etc…

Last time I saw one blow out the top, the horse had about 3" of swollen coronary band with a perfectly straight slit across the center 1" or so. So, yes- yours sounds exactly right for an abscess. When they blow up, as opposed to down, you have to be a bit more careful with cleaning or flushing it because gravity doesn’t help you get everything out.

My horse blew an abcess through his coronet and it did look like a horizontal cut, right along the top of his hoof. But I knew what it was because the smell gave it away. :stuck_out_tongue:

Agree with what joie said – make sure you keep it clean and that it drains. If he becomes sore after it heals over, you’ll need to soak it or consult your vet.

Thanks, both of you – yes, it’s a horizontal “cut”

I’ve been flushing it out anyway as an attempt to keep it clean so I’ll keep going with that…

Sorry about my hand there.

Sounds like an abcess to me. I always keep soaking until it is done draining, but it sounds like it is already done. Really your horse had the best kind of abcess - you never realize it is there until it’s done!

yup, th![](s is the day after my horse’s burst and drain:

it was much yuckier and inflamed and angry looking when it freshly blew out, and though I kept it under wraps to keep debris out, it was puffy and punky and just gross. The photo above is 24 hours of open air healing. I ended up using alushield on it, though I don’t think it did much.

it was a little scary to watch grow out, but did without incident.

gotta love COTH, pics and everything
Mine is just above the hoof, not on it, but it did spend a day or so looking weird and puffy like your pic, buck…
I had been out of town right before this and he was getting hacked by friends, but not every single day, so it could have had a day or two of looking icky before it burst that had been missed…

phew!

On the contrary – nice manicure! How do you keep your hands looking so good with all the hoof work you do?

I wondered the same thing!! I can hardly keep medium-length nails at the barn, never mind a lovely manicure.

LOL that’s the 3 minute nail painting I do every day. Definitely not a manicure. The last time I had a manicure was when I got married 4 years ago. Normally I get grief for my pink boots. http://www.hphoofcare.com/ALFSolarAfter.jpg :o
