what does it look like?
I’ve never seen one, despite a fairly hefty acquaintance with bottom-bursting abscesses…
My horse came in from the field last week with what I thought was a scrape on his coronary band – it was oozing a little blood, so I hosed it off and it looked like sort of a little abrasion…so I treated it as such.
The next day a friend came to ride him. He bonked himself on a log in the woods (just lazy feet, he does this all the time. Horse can jump 4’ without batting an eye but practically falls over logs on the ground…). She thought nothing of it but it must have stung as he overjumped the next log…and the spot was not only bloody when she came in, but now looked like a slice.
I honestly was puzzled as it really didn’t look like a slice when I first saw it; I saw no “cut,” just some angry almost bubbly skin…
Anyway, we have been treating it like a cut but it is a completely straight line, perhaps an inch+ long, and a bit deep.
Today the barn farrier was kindly tapping on the front shoe he pulled in my lesson, happened to see this on his back foot, and said, “oh, he blew out an abscess back there.” He said this was exactly what that looks like.
Yes? No?
Mostly just curious as whatever it is seems to be healing ok and he is sound etc…
