SoCal vet

So my mare has a melanoma that is in a very bad place on her neck for the option of removing it. For years we’ve used the Oncept vaccine and it seemed to work well. When it was first biopsied they removed as much as they were comfortable doing, different vet than we are now at due to moving cross country.
Recently I’ve been concerned that it has started growing again, measurements weren’t taken for over a year due to the move. After talking to the vet we are currently using for the vaccine we are looking at scoping it with the possibility of a CT scan. With the option then being a CT or MRI guided surgery if needed.
If we get to the point I would like to get other vets involved and maybe even have a different one do surgery if we get to that point. We live in San Diego area and have been trailering the San Luis Rey but I’m willing if needed to go as far as needed.

TIA

Pomona has a good facility. As far as I’m concerned, Alamo Pintado is the best. They’re north of Santa Barbara. I’ve trailered there on a number of occasions - for the same type of surgery. And, they are cheaper all around on their costs. Worth the haul to me.

I had a very very good experience with Dr Doddman at Equine Vet Associates in Orange.

Dr Tresser at that practice is the senior vet there and everyone at my barn loves him, but I had a really, really great visit with Dr Doddman and appreciate her knowledge as well as “bedside manner”.

Dr. Martinelli at California Equine Orthopedics is very good with neck and spine issues. I don’t know what his experience is with melanoma, but if my horse needed surgery in an awkward spot on the neck, I would at least consider a consult with him regarding the surgery.

He is in San Marcos.

Another vote for Alamo Pintado. A bit of a trek but an excellent facility with very au courant vets.

Treser is great, I’ve used him for many, many years, but I don’t think he would handle something like this. He typically refers out to a hospital- Chino Hills or SLR.

You can try a consult with Dr Martinelli, or go to Alamo Pintado. Besides SLR they really are the premier equine hospital in SoCal.
