Solar Power for Weekend Trail Rides

Does anyone here use solar power kits to power things like: box fans, cell phone, pump for air mattress, etc? I was looking at the Goal Zero Sherpa 50 set and wasn’t sure it would be what I’m looking for. I thought some of you guys may have some suggestions of solar power or other options. I don’t want to reply of my truck battery for anything except my truck. TIA!

I don’t have a solar kit, I know of at least a few tree-covered campgrounds I go to that finding a strong source for hours to recharge might be hard. I do have a truck battery jumpstarter, that I can also use to plus in a fan, power my phone, fill up a tire, etc. It was about $100, and I love it! Already saved me when a trailer short drained my battery. I probably wouldn’t use it too much, as I want to make sure I can jump the truck if needed.

I think looking at the price of the Sherpa you posted you could buy two jump chargers, keep one for truck emergencies and one to power all your stuff. I think things like the Sherpa are great for backpackers, so maybe if you were doing long trips with packhorses it could be useful. Just my two cents…

The set ups I have seen use solar power to charge marine batteries that power everything. People report a good charge during light snow and cloudy days depending on the set up.

Thanks for the replies! I think I have some more research to do!

Try asking on www.horsetrailerworld.com. That group is VERY knowledgeable about solar use in horse trailers and camping!

A good friend of mine uses a Yeti Solar panel system and it works great on her bison trailer. She goes for months at a time and survives on propane and solar panels. Be careful though, she was out on a 50 and someone stole parts of her system :frowning: Keep a padlock on your tack room if you can. I can’t believe someone did that in such a unique sport with overwhelming comraderie.
