Just shorthand for Hoof Care Provider
This thread is a great opportunity to share a video I recently found and was impressed by: https://www.americanfarriers.com/artā¦or-the-farrier
The sheared heel part is only towards the end of the lecture, much of it covers possible pain points and requirement of farriers to bring back heels, and the catch 22 of wedges and lifts. Its really eye opening and you may find useful.
Usually, when I see posts here about people wanting to intervene with horses they donāt own I take a MYOB stance, but JLu, you did a great job helping and educating! So glad the owner and support team are all on board! Well done and I bet the horse thanks you!!!
OH MAN, that video is GREAT!!! It addresses the pros and cons of what everyone I talked to was talking about!! Iād say this horseās feet look like the ones at 13:27 - 16:00, although the shoes were not as short. The lateral sole sores shown are exactly where the sores were on the right sole. The left is more forward. Iām going to send this link to the owner, thank you! And now Iāll be examining my horseās front feet as well! I canāt wait to explore other videos on that site.
Thank you!!! The owner is a good friend, is relatively new to horse ownership and is really concerned about his horse. Iām really trying to help him gather/navigate good advice and settle on a solid plan forward. Iām learning a lot myself!
UPDATE!
The owner scheduled an appt with my vet and his farrier today. The vet radiographed his feet and found no evidence of navicular dx (whew). The soles were apparently improved, they there were no good baseline measurements. They (she and the farrier) decided on 2 degree wedge shoes, wider and further back under the heel, and rolled for breakover up front. His stance immediately improved, according to the owner. Farrier and vet were pleased with the initial result.
Oh, @buck22 , I sent the video you posted to the owner (his wife was very excited about it). Since he was isolated waiting for his COVID-19 test results (neg), I suspect he watched it!
Just following up!
Yay! Glad you and the owner(s) will find the video useful. I really thought it was fantastic, and REALLY enjoyed how he observed hoof pathology in an ancient statue. Amazing.
Thank YOU for the golden opportunity to share it. I was itching to, but I took a vow many years ago to NEVER start a hoofcare thread here. : )
