Those regs (EID) were implemented IIRC about two years ago. Bute was one of the drugs rendering a horse inelligable for human consumption - period.
If they were serious about those regs, OTTB’s would have stopped going to slaughter at that time. Obviously that is not the case.

The EID is a joke. The owner just has to certify that over the previous x number of months, OR the time that the owner has had the horse (which could be as little as a few days) the horse hasn’t received any drugs, to the best of owner’s knowledge. That’s it. It’s one of the most meaningless things I’ve ever seen.

That said, from what I understood the EIDs were the first part of a process though, which was going to be getting tightened up over the next several years, so there may be some changes coming.

The EID regs are a joke because the TBs coming up from the States do not ever go to a feedlot, supposedly for withdrawal. They go straight to slaughter. So no withdrawal from anything. And I will NEVER believe that TBs (or STBs/QH) directly from the track have no drugs whatsoever. Isn’t bute a lifetime no no, ie there is no withdrawal period.

I know people are checking… and someone had read an article about that and is looking for it.

So apparently it is true that the horses were returned by the slaughterhouse and now that particular company is no longer accepting TBs.

My source has tried the Richelieu plant all day yesterday and only got a recording!

So, I am going to write to Santa this year… too late for the Easter Bunny… but if it’s good for one breed, it should be good for all breeds. In other words, increase the hassle for other breeds as well.

I’m not following all the ins and outs of this story, just read this thread. Am I to beleive one of the following, and which one?

a - the horses went to Wednig’s farm and that’s where they have been all along

b - The horses went somewhere unkown, taken there by Wednig and he made some sort of frantic save and got them back (sold, sent to slaughter, something), or

c - the horses went to a slaughter house, and the slaughter house rejected them for some bizzarre reason and sent them back to Wetnig?

Its hard for me to follow the vague comments on the thread, so if one of these scenarios is the story, fess up! Or, is there something else which happened to these horses that I am unable to devine??

I believe it is c, but they were “rejected” because of the mounting outcry about these two horses and others before. I realize that the reply from the s/h would read better in French, but basically TBs are too much of a headache for them to accept them. Too many people are looking out for them!

There is NO official statement from them yet, and from what I see in the article, they were doing a tap dance.

This would also affect Jaron Gould of Michigan, TB trainer and owner, who ships a large number of TB’s.

Bauer of Ohio also “specializes” in TB’s, he has middlemen down here in KY who get the TB cast offs from the smaller local tracks.

I am curious what they’ll tell you when you get through.

See this is my problem…

Canada is a LOT closer to some of the tracks that have sent horses to slaughter.

Now some poor things with tendons, ankles etc will have to endure much worse travel for the same end result.

Well, as you mentioned, there are still several other slaughterhouses in Canada.

The only other thing stopping TBs from going to Mexico would be location/distance/expense. I imagine for shippers/dealers whose primary business is in Canada (which is most in the northeast and upper midatlantic), the only way to make money on these horses through the slaughter market is to buy them cheap enough to resell through other auctions (like Sugarcreek, where several dealers routinely ship to Mexico.)

I think for the bigger dealers/shippers in this area, that isn’t worth the energy with so many other horses around. However I could easily see TBs from, say, eastern West Virginia, just being shunted up to Sugarcreek instead of New Holland, and from there horses go both north and south.

is Natural Valley still accepting horses? If so I could see that being a destination for US TBs (saskatchewan). But there was a big scandal over undercover video and iirc they stopped on horses at least temporarily.

Unfortunatly i know Mark Wedig is a kill buyer, i was trying to locate a Micheal Gill horse named Master of Disaster a few years ago that Gill had sold to Weding and Weding claimed he never recieved/nor knew the horse…Master of Disaster was never found and as a huge fan of the horse(saw him run at Saratoga in person) don’t wanna fathom where he ended up

A lot of the Gill horses go to “the farm” and disappear forever. Another horse I wanted to buy (Grand Slam - Darby Shuffle) met the same fate.

Personally, I would like to see the reason for the refusal to be simply because of the very high likelihood of butazoladine toxicity in the carcass (one account stated that the SH was given a true drug history of the two horses and that was the reason for they were refused) rather than it is too frustrating to put up with all of the calls and protests dealing with ANY TB horse.

If the reason were because of the high likelihood of bute toxicity then this ban could hopefully also carry through to the other Canadian SHs but also to the Mexican ones, since they all play by the same rules.

If this happens with a ban on TBs, then some groups are going to have to start implementing some very difficult decisions re unsound/unfit horses.

Bumping up because the NYT reports these horses were rejected from the slaughterhouse due to too many drugs in their system. There’s a picture of them in a Holiday Inn parking lot at the link.

I think the kill buyer got lucky that they were rejected.

Slightly OT but pertaining to drugs in the horses system before slaughtering…

Someone at a friends barn had her horse rendered (wasn’t my horse, didnt ask questions, arrived after the deed was done.). Spoke with the ummmm, for lack of better term, “collector” (works for the rendering plant about 30 minutes from here), and according to him, meat which is tainted with drugs (I asked about euth drugs, but according to him it pertains to all drugs) is sent to another processing plant to be cooked in a high temp which eliminates the drugs in the meat (which is why there’s a rendering fee if the animal is euthe’d by drugs, and no fee is assessed if euth’d by bullet). Now, this is a processing plant for animal consumption (dog food, etc), not human, no idea if there’s a difference in what they do.
