Something like Strava for riders?

Mr. PoPo is a biker (road and mountain) and yesterday when he went on a ride with my brother, he sent me a Strava link so I could follow his ride. Strava is for bikers so they can track their rides via GPS and compare it to their other rides and to other people’s rides.

Anyway, does anything like that exist for riders?

I’ve used Endomondo to track my trail rides. It does have social connections, so I suppose if you had a group of riders you knew, you could all connect and compare notes.

What is the reason Strava can’t be used for trail rides? Could Mr. PoPo set you up?

Do you mean social media just to exchange training info - or to literally GPS-track your trail ride?

Why couldn’t you just use Strava?

I use MapMyHike, just because I already have a few of their other apps.

Sure, I could use Strava but was just wondering if there was something horse-related.

Strava can track your ride in real-time, so if you want to let DH or friends know where you are, in case something happens they’ll be able to track you down. I was watching his ride last night and I was worried they wouldn’t make it back down the trail before dark!

There’s the RoadID app, which I also use. You can set it up so that it can send breadcrumbs and will text message your known path to up to 3 people if you fall. If you stop moving for more than 5 minutes, it automatically sends a text for help.

I use MapMyRun for running/biking, but it does offer horseback riding as one of the many workout options (though this really changes nothing except the label on the entry and maybe the calorie calculation). Uses your phone GPS to draw your track and measures your time and distance. Live tracking is available but only with the MVP feature ($30/year) and not the free app. Has options to post to Facebook, Twitter, etc.

because the strava nazis in your neighborhood might get testy.

when you sign on to strava, you have to pick a sport. since there isn’t horseback riding on the list, maybe you pick biking or running –

but Strava uses geolocation to have leaderboards for various locales and the runners and bikers can get grumpy if you throw off the results.

The only time they get grumpy is if you go too fast on a particular segment and break their record. Horses would not be able to go faster than mountain bikes, and unless there was a significant period of cantering, horses would not be faster than runners, either. So, I think you’d be safe w/ Strava if you avoid too much cantering!
