I dewormed my mare with a double dose of Equimax on Wednesday but haven’t seen anything like the swelling or peeling skin shown in other’s photos. How long does it take to see that type of reaction?
Maybe mine really is only bug allergies.

I sincerely doubt you’re gonna see the peeling as the horse in that Horsecity thread. That OP has repeatedly covered that poor guy in MTG and I’m sure it was a reaction from that.
okay let me get this straight…I have a 2 1/2 1000 filly…so I double dose by weight Equimax…wait 14 days then double again…right.
I am scared to death to do this but she looks like those pictures. She doesn’t have lumps but she has scritched the hell outta her mane, tail and da belly.
You got it!
Fear not: these dewormers (to the best of my recollection) are tested at up to 4 times the “normal” dose with no adverse reactions, so a double dose won’t hurt but will get the critters lurking.
So can a horse have a very mild case of NTWs?
Reese has some of the symptoms, but they’re all pretty mild, and attributable to it being plain old summer/bug season (He’s also been suffering for the first time in his life from hives>rainrot). Itchy, scabby area in front of his sheath on his midline, under his chin/between his jowls, and a few (new) little hard bumps on one sid eof his withers. Not much tail rubbing and no hair loss.
What do you all think? Is the double dosing, in this case, overprotective sillyness on my part, or responsible parasite control?
Yes, it’s possible. Often this is how it starts. Just the slight itchies/crusties. Do the double dose and see what happens.
'Tis true, tis true. Actually I think it is even higher than four times, I remember when I looked into it I was surprised at how high it was.
And if anecdotal evidence helps you, I have done it lots and lots and lots of times…
just wish I were doing it to myself, too (creeping all over everytime I open this thread!)
I was freaked out over double dosing with EquiMax too. Treated my mare a couple of days ago and she hasn’t keeled over (fingers crossed and knocking on wood).
I know she did not used to get chewed up like this along the midline when she was younger but in the last few years it has been getting progressively worse. Poor girl. She has rubbed hair off the front of her hind fetlocks because she lays down on her legs and rubs her belly against them. It’s possible this is a growing sensitivity to bug bites and not NTW but we’ll see.
I’m absolutely aghast - I’ve never heard of anything like this up in the PNW. Stuff that some of you have to cope with. Now I have to discuss this with my vet just to make sure. Life is simple here.
Is this regional?

Foxtrot’s post gets me thinking…is this regional? I’m in Northern CA. Haven’t checked everyone’s “home town” to see if any Californian’s have experienced this.
I know there can tend to be more “stuff” going on (for dogs and horses) in the south or anywhere there is more humidity/heat/wetness.
We are pretty dry and fairly cool (near the coast)
My mare does consistently rub her tail and it’s gotten downright rat-looking before. She doesn’t have the other symptoms though…(for threadworms)
I’m confused whether I should try
Panacur PowerPack (5 days straight), then Anthelcyde double 2 weeks later(sp?) then Ivermectin double 2 weeks later?
Or the Equimax double dose, 2 times
Similarly, our new draft horse, (both horses have been on “normal” worming schedles) is SUPER ITCHY all over his topline, but you can’t “see anything”…looks like nice normal coat EXCEPT he rubs the heck out of his tail!
Is it better to try the Panacure Powerpack first? The threadworm stuff seems to look like “sweet itch/summer itch/bug allergy”…and these two don’t show those symptoms.

Serious creepy crawly heebie jeebies!
This puts me struggling in the middle now - between all these hidden potentials (and possibly more common than we think), and the knowledge of fast increasing resistances to all classes of chemicals by all sorts/types of critters, how do you balance the two?[/QUOTE]
Actually, double-dosing is less likely to lead to resistance than under-dosing. One of the biggest causes of resistance is not giving enough of a drug to kill off EVERYTHING. The ones that are left either (can go either way) end up with an immunity & pass that immunity on to their own offspring (happens a lot with insects) or the ones that naturally have some resistance (if not total) survive and with no competition from their own species reproduce like mad. Pretty soon the only nasties left reproducing are the restitant forms. Use a strong enough dose, none survive in the first place and the balance is maintained.
Well, I think it is making a difference already. I double dosed with Equimax 4 days ago and it looks like her midline is already starting to dry up. It’s not oozy and didn’t have as much dirt caked on it as usual so perhaps she hasn’t been rubbing it as much. Looking good so far.
This is how I feel about it, too, and is why I double everything other than Quest and Anthelcide (I do 1 1/2 with that).
I have two horses here right now who have only each had one PP and are not thru an entire rotation yet… boy, you can really tell the difference between them and the horses who have been here for a while. One had skin issues but they are now gone. He still doesn’t have the same bloom everyone else has tho’. The second one has leg crud and his haircoat bleaches out quickly and is rough. He also eats more than anyone else. Of course he also showed up w/a bag of Equine Senior so I know what his OTHER problems were
GET OUT! This is helping sweet itch horses???
Where have I been???
OK…I need to be VERY clear…for a 1500lb horse…would I give a 3000 lb dose?
This is like 2.5 tubes??? of Equimax???
Now???
Edited: I just looked at the photos and it looks just like Milo so I need to do something pronto.
I have all kinds of Ivermectrin and Equimax.
Someone be VERY clear…two TUBES? Double by weight?
Which should I do first? Different one in 14 days.
Please give me a step by step for blondes.
Should I only do him? Or everyone?
Double dose BY WEIGHT. 1500 lbs horse, give 3000 lbs worth of wormer.
Repeat in 14 days.
I have both Ivermectrin AND Equimax…should I do one or the other?
Which is the BEST! This horse is suffering.
ALSO, I just gave him an herbal (WormCheck)-do I need to wait or not? Since this is not chemicals but natural?
Well, I would use the Equimax. Do the full shebang.
I did it with ivermectin (it’s what I had on hand) and while the horse experienced some relief, it was temporary. So now I’m thinking about doing it with Equimax.
Thanks!
I had enough to do everyone!
All horses have had the pipe clean! I will report back with how Milo’s skin is in a week or so.
I will literally weep buckets if this helps this horse!
LMH - trust me - it works. I could have bought a horse with the money I’ve spent on goop and supplements and potions for The Free Horse. I stalked ChocoMare on her wormer threads (stalked her in a nice way) and then read some studies (google scholar in your friend)
For the first time in years - that horse is 100% free of any skin irritation. Can you just imagine how uncomfortable he was??? I did the other horse’s too - the young horse was bothered by what I thought were midges. Under his jaw, his tailbone - raw. All my horses are 100% now.
ALL HAIL CHOCOMARE!
Fancy That - I don’t know much about your climate. These suckers seem to be more of a problem in the South. (hot humid and often mild winters). I’m further north than ChocoMare and we get plenty of freezing temps - but my horses had this problem anyway.
Google Scholar - try searching on the latin name for these worms. I hope you have a strong stomach.
Leah, I’ll betcha 10 bucks you’ll see a difference in days.
Remember All: If it doesn’t totally clear, feel free to double dose again in another 2 weeks.
