Sophie Gochman op-ed and follow ups.

It is always refreshing to me when a young person who is full member of the racial/economic/educated super privileged class actually starts to SEE what is wrong with their part of society.

This has happened throughout history. For one example Buddha had a super privileged youth, he left it to see a truth. His influence permeates a lot of Asia now, while on the other hand did he have any brothers who stayed in their privileged lives? Did they ever do anything in their lives that reverberated for thousands of years? NO, though they may have left genetic descendants who bred on.

Another one was Prince Peter (various spellings) Kropotkin of Tzarist Russia. While Kropotkin may not have been as “highly” born as Buddha he was from the previous ruling family of Russia and had a childhood of privilege, and an excellent education. After serving in the Tzar’s army as an officer, he contributed to educated knowledge about geography, he was the first one to correctly identify the mountain range that divides Europe and Asia when they crashed together so long, long ago. He ended up becoming a “communist” anarchist, gave up his title, wealth, went into exile, supported himself in exile (with some help I am sure), and became a super respected intellectual light in the Left back then.

And all through the centuries the children of the “respected” commoners, the merchants, the manufacturers, the educated elite, scientists, government bureaucrats and other members of the prosperous “middle” have rebelled against the system and left. Remember the 1960s?

It happens. It is GOOD that this happens, when a child of privilege looks around, thinks, and then says "I need to figure something out so I can do SOMETHING about this. It often takes years to figure out WHAT you can do, when you figure it out it might have no resemblance to your youthful fantasies, and it takes a lot of hard work.

I greet Sophie as a sister. You GO young woman!

I guess mainly because of the overall increase in income inequality in the US.

@Mara . I wouldn’t say that I don’t care. Hardly the case. I just don’t agree with the way the current world is going about addressing the issue. I also don’t agree with how the world has chosen to vilify police officers everywhere. Now we are preaching “defund the police”. Great, do that, and when someone is jail-breaking into your house they will send their hope and prayers. I despise the term “white privilege”. Its a racist remark in my eyes. The notion that I was born with white skin gives me some preconceived step up in the world. Does that notion apply to the single white mother in rural America who’s husband was a meth addict and died and now she is left to fend for herself trying to make ends meet in a rat infested trailer or meth addict motel. Or does “white privilege” not apply to her? Does this evaluation apply to a baby born to a Black Lawyer and his white wife? Or does that not apply to this scenario either? White privilege is a term based on ASSUMPTION. The assumption that the majority of all societies give benefits to white people vs black. Slavery existed in America. It did. Times were different then no different than when they were when the Roman empire enslaved white people for their use. But I am not about to erase history and I do not support any entity attempting to do so in the current “modern” climate. When you erase history; it permits it to repeat itself. I will not stand before anyone and apologize, or feel guilt, or feel shame for what my ancestors did. They lived in a different world with different ideals and societal structure. The very fact that we are naming a race as having a privilege based on their skin is further proof of the racial divide; because we are continuing to drive that stake between races. I am going to share a post that I found on facebook written by an African American man named Brandon Tatum. I encourage you to read it "Woke white people, I’d like to ask you a favor: Please stop asking for forgiveness for your “white Privilege” You’re not fooling anybody. You’re not helping black people-or any other minority. And your public confessions don’t make you look virtuous. They make you look Disingenuous, which is a really nice way of saying fake, phony, and fraudulent. For starters, What is “white privilege” anyway? Because you were born with white skin, you have all these advantages that I don’t have? Like What? Like you can get a mortgage loan that I cant get? hmm. I got a loan - at a great rate, by the way-and I got the house. Why would a banker not give a loan to someone who met the loan requirements? He doesn’t want to make money? I’ve never heard of such a banker. Or, how about this: You can enter a store and not be looked upon with suspicion, but I- a Black person- cannot? Except
that has never happened to me. But if I was a young dude with my pants hanging down to my butt, I could understand why a store owner would be concerned. I used to be a cop. Believe me, I understand. If I owned the store- I’d be tracking that kid, too- whether he was black, white or anything else. Or, what if I had a store that had a history of being shoplifted by young black women, and a young black women with a bad attitude walked in. Would I be suspicious? yea, I would. Who wouldn’t? I call that common sense, not bigotry. But there’s another way of looking at this: In many ways, in todays America, Blacks have more privilege than Whites. It’s been m experience that whites bend over backwards to give blacks every possible advantage. If two people are equally qualified for a job, the black person will usually get it. Big companies and other prestigious universities fall all over one another trying to sing up talented black people. If you deny this, you are denying reality Which is what the person who dreamed up this whole thing did- a professor of women’s studies at Wellesley College by the name of Peggy McIntosh. She wrote in article in 1988 all about the “white Privilege” she thought she had. She listed 46, including this one : "“I can choose
bandages in “flesh” color and have them more or less match my skin”. Wow, that’s some kind of privilege!! Soon others took up the cause. Today, these so-called progressives dominate our colleges and universities, imposing this absurd notion of White Privilege on their students. That’s too bad. Because it does nothing good for white students. And it does nothing good for white students. But of the two, ironically, the white students get the better of the deal? Let me explain: To acknowledge your white privilege is supposed to make you feel bad. Only it doesn’t. It makes you feel good because by acknowledging your White Privilege, you’re declaring yourself to be enlightened. And as a virtue-bonus, it also makes you a better person than those whites who don’t acknowledge their privilege. White privilege, which is supposed to make you feel bad, ends up making you feel good. Meanwhile, the real damage is to blacks. What makes whites feel good, makes blacks angry More than 50 yrs after the start of the Civil Rights Movement, the message is “You’re still oppressed”. How can this not create a victim mentality? And anyone-of any color-who sees himself as a victim, gets angry. Now, I wouldn’t deny for a second that there are privileges in life. They are all over the place. There’s two-parent family privilege (that’s huge); there’s being lucky to be born in American privilege. But white privilege? Doesn’t it depend on the person? Lets take this, for example: A black lawyer and his wife have a baby. And a meth addict, single white women has a baby. Which kid has privilege? The white one? Because it is white? Come on now. And here’s the kicker: even if it were true-all those claims about white privilege-so what? Would it change a single thing if it did? If white people apologize for being white, is that supposed to help me, the black man,? in what way? So, lets be real: White privilege Is an attempt by an American political party to further divide Americans by Race. It’s all theory and all nonsense. If you want to fall for it, go ahead- it is a free country. But don’t try to sell it to me. Im an American who deals with my fellow Americans one-on-one. Try it, it works

I’ll try to finish reading this at some point
I can’t get past all the dog whistles calling for all this equality stuff to stop, because the system works perfectly for this person. This is a perfect example of trying to protect the system. I have seen so many memes on Facebook that people post to prove they aren’t racist, and the meme itself is racist.

Actually it was worth struggling through.

I’ll try to finish reading the rest of this post later, I can’t get past all the dog whistles calling for all this equality stuff to end. This is a perfect example of protecting the system, because the system works for this person. It also goes along with a theme I am seeing on Facebook, people are posting memes to prove they aren’t racist, and the meme itself is racist.

Yes, it applies to her because she didn’t have the added disadvantage of being black in a white world.

My stepson attempted this argument. He is a drug user, drug seller, felon, four children (ages 6 to 27) with three different women. Multiple interactions with police every year for the last 30 years. Laughed at the idea that he had white privilege. I told him he was the poster child for white privilege, since after all this time and all of his law breaking he has so far spent 9 months in prison. He had parents who could pony up for attorneys who helped him get into programs instead of prison and got his multiple felonies reduced to one. I asked him how many white guys were in his rehab program and he said they were mostly white. I said, ‘and was prison mostly white too?’

My last comment wouldn’t go through because I quoted snaffle’s post and it was marked as spam. I couldn’t get past all the dog whistles calling for all this equality stuff to end, because the system works for them. The post is a perfect example of protecting the system, imo. It kind of goes along with a trend I am seeing on Facebook as well. People are sharing memes to prove they aren’t racist, and the meme itself is racist.

LOL to Laurierace- she beat me to it.

Dang Snaffle- you are one angry person.

White privilege is not class privilege. White privilege is you are born into the racial norm.

  1. Band-aids- flesh colored-- do they more or less match a skin tone?
  2. Flip on the TV- is it predominantly your race?
  3. Go buy a greeting card, dolls etc- is it easy to find your race?

Do not mix privilege with financial. “White privilege” is being validated that you are almost always “socially included” in the above mentioned.

When you are white, you are “less likely” to

  1. called a racial slur
  2. “where are you from”

Good lord- admitting white privilege not translate in to racism. It means you, we, I whatever, is the dominant ethnicity in society.

Seriously- expecting marginalized people to disregard their own emotions because of your lack of understanding is the epitome of entitlement.

Read Peggy McIntosh’s “Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”. (I’ve given up on Snaffle- but if anyone is interested. And the kicker is it took a WHITE woman in the 1980’s to get through what blacks had been saying for decades).

I wrote my own followup to Missy’s piece. I hope that it can illuminate some of the misconceptions about what white privilege means to our industry and in general.

But why is it bad that POC are speaking out, saying that white privileged doesn’t exist? Why do you not believe them? Why are they thought to be lying? That’s what I don’t understand. Why must all POC admit to being treated poorly due to their skin color when there are thousands who think the opposite

this is not a comment on whether there is or isn’t racism within equestrian sport- it’s a question as to why can POC who don’t believe in white privileged or believe that racism is as rampant as ever, not be believed when they publicly speak?

sorry, I entered paragraphs but the new COTH forum condenses it into a large paragraph when I post.

Highly, highly suggest everyone reads this. I already shared it on my personal Facebook because it gives a great explanation of redlining.

@rah ; my post was an entire post written by a BLACK MAN who lives in the DEEP SOUTH. This same black man is a former police officer and was the director of Urban Outreach for Turning Point USA. I’d say as a Black Man raised in southern America and who later served as a police officer; he has pretty much seen and lived every side of the coin. If he came here and wrote his words himself; would it be any different?

@pennywell. Not angry. Just honest. My post was quoted from and written by a BLACK PERSON in the south in America. You cant spew a one sided argument and expect everyone to agree with your sentiments. If you challenge me to reconsider my beliefs on this subject that I challenge you to view the viewpoints I have quoted above from a Black American, retired police officer who has seen every side of the argument in his profession and upbringing.

and @ midge; how do you know that I am white? Are you making a preconceived judgement about me? Perhaps I know more/have more first hand experience than you seem to assume

Do any of you actually KNOW Missy? Didn’t think so. Have any of you sponsored a disadvantaged rider? A “minority” rider? Ever GIVEN anyone a horse to ride and/or show because that person put in the work? Anyone
??? Beuller
???
I’m astounded by all the feigned outrage from a group of privileged (mostly) white women, extolling and enumerating the “sins” of everyone with whom they have a procedural, political or moral difference. I can rest assuredly tell you that Missy is no racist. Her benchmark for “acceptance” is that the individual is ready to put in the work required to get the job done.
Bearing in mind that any jackass can kick a barn down, what are your solutions to remedy the SOCIOECONOMIC reality of the cost of showing which is certainly more restrictive than any color barrier? Anyone ready to give a horse, entries, housing, for, transportation to an economically challenged individual REGARDLESS OF RACE COLOR CREED ORIENTATION etc? Yes, I have. More than once.
All those of you who see racism in EVERY aspect of life, let me suggest this. When all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.
Instead of finding fault with others, why not consider looking in the mirror. Your feigned outrage is as appalling as your relentless attacks on others with a different point of view. I haven’t posted here in forever and may not again because the pack of jackles will descend on those with ac differing point of view and silence all discussion. Feel free to go on the attack and make snide, cutting comments. You seem to have a flair for personal attacks.
