Sore-No-More: lathers when on sore muscles?

I was reordering some SNM, and saw this in the item description –

It’s on Dover’s website https://www.doversaddlery.com/equilite-sore-no-more-liniment-gel/p/X1-22124/

Is that true? How does that work?

Interesting. I’ve only used the spray, and never saw it lather, but anecdotally I feel like it does help my own sore muscles.

No doubt the product works- after I use it on my horse, hands and wrists feel great!

Not so sure about the “lathers on sore muscles” - however, horse sweat does contain a protein with detergent like properties called latherin. It’s a surfactant that helps it evaporate faster (which is neat bc salt water usually evaporates slower than freshwater)… That’s why horses get frothy where they sweat and rub tails/reins/etc… and may be why “sore” muscles lather with SNM.

It is likely from the witch hazel (which you can get cheap at the drug store & can also use for horse massage) – which also will kind of foam up on sore muscles, although it obviously doesn’t “know” they are sore, I think it’s just a reaction to the warmer area or something similar. And it doesn’t always happen. I use SNM often & it does sometimes foam up a little on an active sore spot, but I wouldn’t call it a reliable indicator.

@specifiedcupcake I didn’t know that about the sweat surfactant, though, thanks for the fun fact!

Mine lathers just about every time, but I am using it over big areas (back, neck). I was wondering how the lather could be a reliable indicator, vs a normal not sore muscle!

I think the product works well. Still skeptical about the lathering being an indication of sore muscles though

It will lather on lower legs if you rub like you are supposed to rub linament. They don’t have muscles.

I never really noticed lathering one way or another but funny SNM story- My mom recently had both knees replaced and before that had been liberally using SNM on them to help the aching. After the procedure, her PT was coming out to the house for her therapy. PT saw the SNM sitting next too my mom (who thought uh oh busted for using horse liniment)- turns out PT was a horse person and told my mom to keep using it because it was definitely helping her
