Sore Pup- OTC Pain Meds?

I have a 3yo Beagle mix who managed to get herself tangled up in a fence last night. It’s nothing serious (just a few scrapes) but she’s pretty ouchy. Is there anything over the counter that I can give her to help mange the pain for the next few days? I’ve heard baby aspirin can work but I wanted to check with the COTH geniuses first.

TIA!

ETA- She’s UTD on all of her shots (including tetanus) so I’m not worried about that. All of her wounds are also very superficial.

We give Ascriptin, which is just aspirin buffered with maalox. I"m not sure of the exact dosing recommendations, but know that when my dogs have needed pain relief my vet has ok’d 1 Ascriptin tablet – so my 45lb dog would get 325mg of aspirin buffered with maalox.

Probably best to double check with your vet if you can – just ask how many mg/aspirin for your dog’s body weight for minor pain management. 325mg actually sounds like a lot, but maybe it’s not. We hardly ever give it…

Aspirin works ok, although not great. If you have a good relationship with your vet you can probably ask them to prescribe you something that would work better

Depending on the weight of the dog, it doesn’t have to be baby aspirin, but it DOES have to be buffered aspirin (like Bayer).

Yeah, these days they have fancier stuff, but “back in the day” buffered aspirin was all we had.

But you might want to try a topical ointment instead, like an aloe gel or something.

She’s 35 lbs and so I went with 1/2 pill of adult buffered aspirin (Bayer). It seems to help a lot and she’s much more comfortable. Unfortunately I’m new to the area and don’t really have a relationship with a vet here yet.

I’ve always used ascriptin too. It is getting kind of hard to find it though.

You can also find and use Traumeil at a health food store.
