While gone at a show the home help turned out one of my horses with turnout boots that were too tight for 3 days in the heat. Now, naturally, she has abrasions all over her legs from the neoprene overheating and rubbing. Does anyone else have experience with this? What can I put on the sores? She is completely sound and they are beginning to heal, but I’m worried with the warmer weather coming and flies returning they will become summer sores if I’m not careful
This usually happens when the boots are left on over night, though being too tight during extreme heat might have the same results.
Get rid of the neoprene boots. Especially while she’s healing. Instead, find a leather or heavy duty vinyl fleece lined boot. If you’re concerned about over - tightening, either cut the strap or apply permanent market on or next to the velcro or buckle with instructions not to tighten beyond that.
There are fly boots available from many blanket manufacturers. From my understanding, summer sores are exacerbated by insects
Rub some Desitin (zinc oxide, get the extra strength version) on the sores. That will help them heal, keep the bugs off, and it stays on pretty well even during turnout.
Keep all boots off until they heal completely. I find that SWAT works best to keep bugs off, Alum spray is pretty good too. And definitely switch to non-neoprene boots (although personally I wouldn’t use any turnout boots if at all possible and definitely nothing put on by whoever put them on and left them on and probably would rethink boarding there altogether.)
Silver spray if they are open or weapy wounds. Keep the wounds clean. Wash and dry legs after turnout to keep clean. No boots until healed to keep rubs from reoccurring.
I agree with others to ditch the neoprene. Get something that won’t rub and something they can’t over tighten.

Professionals Choice make really nice fleece lined fly boots. Fly protection and some protection from bumps and bangs.

I agree with Amber Ridge so long as hoss isn’t interfering as he’s bombing around paddock. Also, be very careful with the fly boots b/c I’ve seen folks leave them on too tightly and that nylon just cuts right through healthy flesh, never mind healing wound margins.
