Sorting Stuff And Cleaning Harness, General Silliness!

We have been spending a lot of time sorting down the Tack Room and my various storage spots, trying to consolidate things that are alike and getting it in less locations.

Frankly, with it all spread out down the barn aisle I am SHOCKED at how much STUFF there is. I definitely will be doing the Tack Sale rounds to get rid of things!! I found out I am a secret (didn’t even suspect myself!) horse blanket hoarder. But finding one LARGE wooden box full of various blankets, adding on the Rubber Maid tubs of sheets and blankets, knowing there are more in the two horse trailers, PLUS another tack trunk half full, I will have to accept the truth. Even with ALL the horses we have, I can’t use that many blankets with daily changes! And only one horse ACTUALLY wears a rainsheet blanket in winter, and only if it is below 30F. All the others go with fur only, outside even when the cold is severe. I am afraid to add up the quantity, it will be a nasty shock. Just too many places to “put things away” in.

Harness is similar, got it out of the cabinets, trunks, boxes, trailer, laid it out to view. I bet there is a LARGE herd of cowhide in harness items. Found things I had forgotten about, others that were “I wonder where I put that” kind of things. Husband got dragged out, so we could sort what he thought would be used in the future, never going to use stuff, save for a spare items like reins of the correct width and lengths, odd things that came with other things but didn’t fit horses we have. Found some brass buckle things which will get sold, since we have no brass harness anymore.

The pile of things needing cleaning, polishing, is sizable, but none are really dirty. Just not shiny. I can see myself watching Movies on TV while polishing! Would be great if the weather wasn’t so nice outside! So far it is being a great weather winter to do things outside, which is what started this problem.

Have to say it was easy to gather up parts to assemble a single harness for the filly who came home from the Trainer on Sunday. I knew where everything was at hand! It is kind of a mixed batch, Zilco backpad, Smuckers leather, short ended V-breastcollar, Zilco bridle with Tedman traces. I have a Van Der Weil bridle if the Zilco doesn’t fit well. But all safe, solid, will fit her fine to start working here for us.

I do like the feeling of accomplishment when leather of harness is clean, flexible and soft, has that soft glow to it before it gets put back away for storage.

I got a new roll of tape for my Label Maker, things WILL be better organized this time when put away! Ha Ha The Tack Sale stuff will be boxed, then move it to another storage location for easy out and into the truck to attend the sales. Hoping my DD will come help sell. Always easier with two than just one. I am not sure exactly how this stuff accumulates, unless it is because sometimes they are “such bargins” one of us can’t resist. Then it gets put away “until we need it” and forgotten. The stuff used daily is all in good shape, nothing seems to ever wear out!

My only hope is as the young horses come along and we get back to driving Four, that more stuff gets used often to keep it nice. We can have daily use AND good stuff out to use often. Heck, maybe we will even get a Six together, I bought the Leader Reins for it! We could work everyone at the same time!! Now if we can just find a Yellowstone Coach, things will be perfect! He can drive, while I sit in back to wave at the amazed folks along the road as we canter by with the Six!! It is good to have a goal, so MAYBE someday…

What size blankets do you have? I’m a blanket hoarder, too but right now I have a big and small one that don’t fit much of anything that I own.

I can proudly (?) claim I am not a hoarder of horse clothing.

Of course, I have never owned more than 2 at any time, and that said, I do have a lovely wooden trunk in my basement holding a lord-knows-what assortment of “stuff” < bridle pieces, bits, various & sundry miscellany.
And my barn - nearing its 12th year of occupancy - now contains an alarming cache of ThingsThatShouldBeGoneThroughAndCleaned,RepairedOrDiscarded.

goodhors:
if you happen to come upon a complete working pony-sized (13h) harness, let me know.
Santa needs to leave the pony something he can wear besides my cobbled-together, makeshift, for-groundwork-only arrangement of strap goods

Cleaning tack in front of the TV is my all-favorite pastime . . . .

I second myself for the list of 13h pony “things”. . . especially blankets/coolers/sheets. Will happily pay for used.

Pony is the only creature in the barn that has not accumulated a closet’s worth of “clothing”.

Don’t supposed you’d happen to have a size 105, or larger, turn out rug?
I’d happily pay for used also. I think I’m just going to have to buy canvas and make one myself.

Goodhors, welcome to Tackaholics Anonymous.

I ride dressage, and do not have plans to put either of my horses in harness (no vehicle). And yet, because of my previous passion for driving and CDEs, I have three sets of Smuckers harness. Black and brass, black and silver, and Russet. All horse size. I should really get around to selling it. At least the brass!

And while I “detackified” my riding tack several years ago, it seems to have accumulated again. And blankets, as well. At least the horse clothes are mostly size 78s, which seem to be one of the popular sizes, as opposed to, say, 87!

I, too, love cleaning tack. Maybe I am making sure I always have something around that needs cleaning,

Goodness! 105 inches?!? No, it must be cm, right?

He’s a Percheron, 18.3 hh, about 2600 lbs. I have ordered him a size 105 at least half a dozen times and never been able to get one. Last year we tied his 102 on with long parachute cord. He’s my baby and he tells me he’s cold.

Ahhh, that explains the 105!

Well, I don’t have a blanket that large, sorry. The only pony size stuff is a couple blankets for the foal. Her stuff will be sold next year when she outgrows it. Probably won’t even need them, but you folks know how it is. “Just in case of cold or wet, I should keep these on hand.”

No pony harness, since the last pony I drove was about 30 years ago, and it was a cobbled mess harness then. I am pretty sure I tossed it to prevent anyone getting hurt trying to use it.

So I guess I can’t help you, thanks for asking! You might check locally, attend some Tack Sales where folks like me go to sell our extra stuff. Ours start in a big way after New Years all over the State. I have been fortunate in selling and buying non-Driving stuff for our equines, adding to my Navaho style saddle blanket collection. Ha Ha They do make nice rugs and the cat loves rolling on them! I do see some harness, but it isn’t suitable for my needs, being Fine Harness, pony sizes, Draft stuff, though other people are really happy to find it.

Part of the problem is when you go buy more because you forget you have it or can’t find it. That’s how it gets out of hand  But I have things I won’t part with because they are wonderful quality and they have good memories. The heavy old Baker blankets tend to rub shoulders but I still have one from the 80s that has repairs done by my grandmother. It will probably never see the outside of a horse again (shhh don’t tell my husband… I told him it was irreplaceably useful )

Yeah, I still have two blanket my two old small horses wore and the last one died 10 years ago. However! The two young mares are going to be smaller than the Boys we drive now, so MAYBE they can wear them as they mature more. You can see how my collection has gotten out of hand!

SmartAlex . . . you should take the Baker blanket and make it into something functional for the house. I just used an old 1980’s heavy original Baker to re cover an entry-way bench. It is gorgeous and “horsey” without being over the top.

those old Bakers fit so weird! I dragged mine around for decades hoping I’d come across a horse it would fit. from 13H ponies to 16H horses it never fit anyone. It looks like it was made for a narrow chested long horse. I don’t remember horses in the 80" ever looking like that. LOL

So…what tack sales in MI are you attending?

Perhaps I should plan to make it to those sales! I do need a harness for my gelding.

Sorry, didn’t see your post until today. I usually go to Hartland, Ingham County, sometimes the Jr. Morgan sale in Pinckney, Ionia. Clinton County moved their day, so that might be doable, also the one in Chesning. By then I am pretty beat, tired of driving and selling.

There are other good ones, just too far to attend for me. Pinkney might be good for fine harness, more ring driving with the Morgan folks. Hartland always is a mixed bag, don’t know who will be there with what. I found lots of good deals in what I wanted there, over the years. Be willing to dicker, lots of dirty stuff is priced like new, not worth it. For Pleasure Driving, you want a more sturdy harness, not a fine harness. Have your horse measurements with you, so you can check for sizes. If you have no luck, maybe someone I know will have something to sell.

Thanks! Looks like you are on the opposite side of the state from me, so I guess I won’t be running into you at any tack sales.

I’m hoping the skinny little pony I picked up at the auction will fill in and grow up in the next three months so that I can get a harness to fit him and my current gelding. We shall see!

I am kind of central, with what I think are good sales towards the East and South of me. I have been looking at some west side sales, good excuse to visit with my friend in Grand Rapids area. Lot depends on the weather, always worse on the west side in being higher and deeper! I know, I used to live over that way. The Sale postings are appearing, looks like the first one I want to attend is the 16th. Have to make a schedule, get my reservation in for spots.

Grand Rapids would be a good start–not too far from me. The Allendale tack sale is always great–but I’m not sure what kind of market there is out here for driving. Message me if you want the information for this sale, I just saw the Craigslist posting today.

So far, not a ton of snow over here yet. Maybe we just won’t get any lake effect snow this year, right?
